Biography
Born on January 4, 1922 in the village of Vymly, now in the Sonkovsky district of the Tver region . He graduated from 8 classes of the school, in 1938 - FZU.
Since 1937, he worked as an assistant shipman and ship collector at the Baltic Shipyard in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). At the beginning of World War II, he repaired warships at the factory.
In 1942 he voluntarily joined the army. Member of World War II . Participated in the defense and lifting of the siege of Leningrad. In 1946 he was demobilized.
He returned to the Baltic Shipyard. He became the foreman of the hull assemblers of metal vessels, mastered the related professions of gas cutter, electric welder and cutter. He participated in the construction of cargo and utility vehicles, tankers, refrigerators, bulk carriers, chemical carriers, icebreakers for the Arctic, research vessels.
For outstanding production successes and the initiative taken in organizing the competition for the title of brigade and drummer of communist labor, Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated May 28, 1960, Smirnov Vasily Alexandrovich was awarded the title Hero of Socialist Labor with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Medal "Hammer and Sickle."
In the 1960s and 1970s, a crew of shipbuilders led by V. A. Smirnov actively participated in the construction of serial tankers of the Beijing type (with a displacement of 40,000 tons) and Sofia type (with a displacement of 62,000 tons), as well as a series of atomic icebreakers of the second generations (including the Arctic icebreaker, which reached the North Pole in active Arctic navigation in 1974 ) and heavy nuclear missile cruisers.
For outstanding labor successes, the closed Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 23, 1978, Smirnov Vasily Alexandrovich was awarded the Order of Lenin and the second gold medal "Hammer and Sickle".
He lived in Leningrad. He died in 1996 . He was buried at the Volkovsky Orthodox cemetery in St. Petersburg .
Member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1971-1976 (candidate - since 1961 ). He was chairman of the Council of Innovators of enterprises and organizations of the shipbuilding industry.
