Tovada ( Japanese 十 和田 湖 Tovada-ko ) is the largest crater lake on Honshu Island, Japan . Located at an altitude of 400 m above sea level in a national park on the border of Aomori and Akita prefectures. The walls of the caldera in some places reach a height of 1,000 m and reach the peak on the volcano Tovada at an altitude of 1,159 m. The bright blue color of the lake is the result of clear water and the great depth of the lake (326.8 m is the third deepest lake in Japan). Visibility is 15 m. The area of the lake is 61.0 km², its volume is 4.19 km³, and the perimeter is 46 km. From the lake flows the Oirase River .

The lake is visited annually by approx. 3 million tourists. It is suitable for swimming and is a favorite destination for travelers. There are numerous hotels and pensions. Late summer, there is a common holiday of the three prefectures of Kunizan Kai Matsuri . Ferries and pleasure boats ply the lake several times a day.
