Content
Title
It comes from the Greek word leimon - a lawn, a meadow, according to the habitat of some species of the genus.
Distribution
Representatives of the genus are found on all continents, but mainly from the Mediterranean to Central Asia. It is represented on the territory of the former USSR by 40 species, nine are found in Western Siberia and two in Altai .
Plants of this genus often grow on saline soils. Some form the so-called tumbleweed .
Botanical Description
Perennial grasses , less often shrubs.
The leaves are large, mostly only basal.
Flowers in panicles , small, five-membered, pink, purple or yellow; stigmas are filiform.
Practical use
The roots contain tannins and many kermeks have long been used to tan leather. Some kermeks receive yellow, green, pink and black paints for leather and carpet production.
Many representatives of the genus are used as ornamental plants. Until recently, about 30 types of kermek were used in floriculture, and even then it was very limited, but now the interest in these crops has greatly increased both among arrangers, landscape designers and flower gardeners. In this regard, many interesting new varieties were created by breeders and a number of new species were introduced into the culture. As annuals, Kermek notched ( Limonium sinuatum ), Chinese Kermek ( Limonium sinense ), Kermek Peres ( Limonium perezii ) are grown, as perennials - Kermek Gmelin ( Limonium gmelinii ), Kermek ordinary ( Limonium vulgare ), Kermek broadleaf Limon .
Kermek Gmelin ( Limonium gmelinii ) is a medicinal plant used in modern folk medicine.
