The museum was opened on May 8, 1966, the first exhibition - “It is dedicated to the living and fallen in the battles with fascism ...” [2] . The first director was the artist Vasily Maksimovich Astakhov. In 1999, the Archaeological Museum was opened - a branch of the city museum [3] .
Later, new halls, expositions and exhibitions devoted to the construction of the Stalinogorsk Chemical Combine and the city, and the restoration of industry in the post-war years were opened. Museum funds were replenished with materials, documents and household items [2] .
In 1981, the museum opened an exhibition dedicated to the poet Ya. V. Smelyakov , who lived as a prisoner in Stalinogorsk in 1945-1947. In the late 1980s, a combat vehicle BM-13-16 "Katyusha" was installed in front of the museum, which took part in the battles for the city [2] .
In 2001, the museum received the status of historical and artistic. Each year the museum organizes more than 20 temporary exhibitions, and also features a large collection of works of art: paintings by local artists, applied arts, antiques, numismatics, and much more [2] .
Exposure
The museum contains historical materials about the construction of "New Moscow" - the city of Novomoskovsk, about the war years, the difficulties of post-war reconstruction and the further development of the city. In the museum you can find information about enterprises, scientific and educational institutions of the city, as well as people whose names are written in the history of the city: miners, chemists, builders, village workers [3] .
A separate exhibition is dedicated to the poet Ya. V. Smelyakov , who worked in Stalinogorsk in 1945-1946. A large photographic and documentary material is presented, including drafts of poems from the Stalinogorsk period of Smelyakov’s life, personal belongings (transferred to the poet’s widow), as well as books of the poet’s students and friends with inscriptions [4] .
The museum is not only a keeper of history, but also a cultural center. Art exhibitions are regularly held in the museum [5] , there are expositions of a very different nature, ranging from the children's riska to Tula samovars, display of herbaria or unique collections of sea shells [3] .
Since the 1980s, archaeological excavations have been carried out on the territory of Novomoskovsk and neighboring areas. Most of the exhibits in the archaeological museum provided Novomoskovsk archeologists, led by Oleg Zaidov [3] .
Katyusha monument at the entrance to the museum
On December 12, 1941, during the liberation of Stalinogorsk from a firing position near the village of Urusovo, the 12th Separate Guards Mortar Division of the rocket artillery covered the German forces at the Maklets station with two volleys. After completing the combat mission, the division began redeploying to the south bank of the Shat . However, having fallen under intense shelling, the column turned around and forced the Shat across the ice. A car, a tractor and several Katyushas passed, but one installation of the BM-13-16 sank [6] .

November 25, 1988, a group of enthusiasts raised the sunken car from the bottom of the Shatsky reservoir . After restoration at the plant for repairing road cars, the Katyusha was installed on a pedestal at the local history museum [6] . Townspeople associate the museum with this fighting vehicle, which took part in the battles for the city, and called the museum “At Katyusha” [2] .
On February 21, 2013, a memorial plaque was installed on the “Katyusha” about its combat path and the expedition of the newspaper “ Komsomolskaya Pravda ”, which, at the initiative of the front-line missile player Yuri Andreyevich Nikishin, raised it in 1988.
