Papua New Guinea took part in the 9th Summer Olympics. Having first taken part in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , Papua New Guinea boycotted the Summer Olympic Games in Moscow . After the Moscow Games, the country took part in all the Summer Olympics.

Altogether, 40 men and 11 women represented the country at the Olympic Games, participating in boxing, athletics, sailing, swimming, shooting, taekwondo and weightlifting competitions. The largest delegation represented the country at the 1992 Olympics (13 people).
The country did not participate in the Winter Olympics . Papua New Guinea athletes have never won Olympic medals . The highest result at the Games among athletes of this country was shown by Dika Tua , who took sixth place in the women's weightlifting competitions in 2004 in the weight category up to 53 kilograms.
The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee was established in 1973 , recognized by the IOC in 1974 .
