In 1780, the Christian mission Pozuelos was founded on the site of the city. On April 9, 1862, a group of 26 families from the island of Margarita moved to Pozuelos and founded a settlement, which they named Puerto de la Santa Cruz (Port of the Holy Cross). Over time, the name has shrunk to Puerto la Cruz.

The city is a popular tourist center with a developed hotel complex and beaches. Around the city is a reserve National Park Mochima .
