Philosophical Propaedeutics

Philosophic propaedeutics (German: Philosophische Propädeutik ) - Hegel's work, published posthumously based on the materials of the philosophy course that Hegel taught in high school of the Nuremberg Gymnasium ( Egidiengymnasium ). It dates from 1808-1811. It is intended as an initial introduction to philosophy for high school students [1] . It is divided into three parts corresponding to three years of study.

It was written shortly after the release of The Phenomenology of the Spirit (1807). Almost at the same time, work was underway on Hegel's next major work, The Science of Logic , the first book of which was published in early 1812.

“Philosophical Propaedeutics” was originally published by Hegel’s student and biographer Karl Rosencrantz on the basis of Hegel’s manuscript and records of listeners found in 1838.

Content

Work structure

  • The first course. The doctrine of law, duty and religion. The central theme of this course is the will as "the uncertainty of the Self." Therefore, will implies freedom. The right is a guarantee of freedom. Freedom lies in possession and gift, which are based on the concept of a contract. Free natural association of individuals is called family. A group of families with formalized legal relations becomes a nation-state. The core of the state is the law as an expression of universal will. Law also means debt. Duty, for example, prescribes respect for the law and courtesy of other people. God, according to Hegel, is an "absolute spirit."
  • The second course. Phenomenology of the spirit and logic. The phenomenology of the spirit is thought of by the doctrine of consciousness, which, in turn, is nothing but the relation of the I to the object.
  • The third course. The doctrine of the concept and philosophical encyclopedia.
