The first reliably known representative of the genus was Herman , mentioned in 1112–1147 as the lord of Heimbach and Gengebach. His grandson, Eberhard II (d. After 1217) married Jutta, sister and heiress of Count Julich William II the Great . According to the agreement, after the death of William II in 1207, Julich inherited the eldest of the sons of Ebergard and Jutta - William III , who became the ancestor of the genus Julich-Gengebach. The descendants of William III were counts of Julich. His great-grandson, William V (VI) (d. 1361), supported Emperor Louis IV of Bavaria , for which he was made Margrave and Imperial Prince in 1336, and Louis's successor, Charles IV , to whose camp Wilhelm transferred after Louis's death, made him in 1356 by the Duke (under the name William I). Under the sons of William, the clan was divided into 2 branches - Berg and Geldern.

The ancestor of the Berg branch was the eldest son of Duke William I, Gerhard VI (I) (d. 1360), who received a dowry from his wife counties of Berg and Ravensberg. Moreover, Julich went to his younger brother, William II (c. 1325-1393). Gerhard further increased his holdings by acquiring the county of Hardenberg and a number of other holdings. Under his son, William II (d. 1408), in 1380 , Berg was elevated to the status of duchy.

Wilhelm II , Duke of Julich, who became the ancestor of the Geldern branch, thanks to his marriage to the sister of the Duke of Geldern, managed in 1372 to ensure the inheritance of his sons in Geldern. However, after the death of Raynald, who did not leave his legitimate sons (c. 1365-1423), the youngest son of William II, the branch died out. Jülich and Geldern were separated. Geldern inherited Arnold Egmont , and Julich - Duke of Berg Adolf IX (d. 1437). This association marked the beginning of the formation of the united Duchy of Julich Berg .

The male lineage faded away in 1511 after the death of Duke William IV (III) (1455-1511), who left only his daughter Mary (1491-1543), who was married to Duke John III of Cleves (1490-1539). John III eventually inherited the vast possessions of the house, forming the Duchy of Julich Kleve Berg .
