The battle at Tehumardi is one of the fiercest battles on the island of Saaremaa , which took place on the night of October 8–9, 1944 and was the completion of the first stage of the Moonsund landing operation .

The course of hostilities
In the night battle near the village of Tehumardi, the 2nd battalion of the 67th Potsdam Grenadier Regiment (360 people) and the units of the 307th separate fighter-anti-tank division of the 249th Estonian Rifle Division (total 670 people) collided.
Loss of Parties
Losses of the parties amounted to approximately 200 people, which included senior officers led by the commander of the 307th separate anti-tank battalion, Major W. Miller .
Perpetuating the memory of those killed in battle
In 1967, in memory of the dead Soviet soldiers at the scene of the battle, a sword-shaped monument was opened to the defenders and liberators of the island of Saaremaa , made of concrete and dolomite (authors R. Kuld, A. Murdmaa, M. Varik).
