Biography
Born on September 21, 1921 in the city of Nikopol, now in the Dnipropetrovsk region, in a working class family. Ukrainian. Member of the CPSU (b) since 1943.
He graduated from 7 classes, worked at the South Pipe Plant. Drafted into the Red Army in 1941. In 1943 he graduated from the Chuguev Military Aviation Pilot School.
Member of the Great Patriotic War since June 1943. He fought on the Bryansk, 1st Baltic, 3rd Belorussian, 1st Ukrainian fronts. He received his first baptism of fire near Orel.
October 15, 1943 in an air battle shot down the first enemy aircraft.
In the fall of 1943, in one of the sorties in the Nikopol region (Dnepropetrovsk region), Gonchar discovered a bridge over the Dnieper, lowered 15-20 centimeters below the water level. On this bridge the enemy carried out a covert transfer of troops to the Nikopol bridgehead for a subsequent strike in the areas of Perekop, Kakhovka and Kherson. Having reported to the command about the crossing, Gonchar volunteered to destroy it. His link completed a combat mission.
During the liberation of the Baltic states, six fighters, led by the Guard, Senior Lieutenant Gonchar, attacked sixteen enemy bombers, accompanied by four fighters. The enemy was forced to throw off the bomb supply in a mess and turn back. In this battle, Potter shot down four bombers.
April 17, 1945 south-east of the city of Cottbus (Germany) shot down two aircraft FV-190.
On April 20, 1945, in difficult weather conditions, Gonchar, at the head of the six Yak-9 fighters, will fly to reconnaissance of ground conditions. When flying over Berlin, our planes came under strong anti-aircraft fire of the enemy. Gonchar’s plane was shot down, but the commander didn’t return to his airfield until the unit completed the mission.
Returning in a damaged car, Gonchar reached the territory occupied by our troops. But when landing, the plane did not give in to control and crashed. The pilot died.
The commander of the 89th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 7th Guards Fighter Aviation Division of the 2nd Fighter Aviation Corps of the 2nd Air Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front of the Guard Senior Lieutenant Gonchar made 87 sorties from June 1943 to April 1945, in 28 air battles, shot down 16 enemy aircraft.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 27, 1945, for the exemplary fulfillment of command assignments and the courage and heroism shown at the same time, guards senior lieutenant Gonchar Ivan Alekseevich was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
He was buried in the north-eastern part of the German cemetery in the city of Sommerfeld , 16766 Kremen (Germany).
