History

Little is known about the first representatives of the genus, and its genealogy is confused and incomplete. The first known representative of the genus was Gerhard I , mentioned in 1029 as a count in Yulichgau . In 1093, his great-grandson, Count Gerhard III , received the status of imperial count. The house reached its greatest power under the reign of Count William II the Great . He had no children, after his death in 1207, the family died away on the male line, however, Wilhelm during his lifetime gained recognition as his heir, Wilhelm von Gengebach , the son of his sister, Jutta, who inherited the county under the name Wilhelm III. The genus founded by him is called the house of Yulich-Gengebach .
