Radeon Evergreen (R800) is the codename for the GPU line manufactured by the AMD graphics division. The first chip in the series was Cypress. Cypress, and video cards based on it - 5850 and 5870 - were presented on September 22, 2009. Evergreen family - the first GPU with support for DirectX 11 . The most powerful solution in the Evergreen family will be the dual-chip Hemlock . For cheaper solutions, Juniper , Redwood and Cedar are presented.

Development History
On September 10, 2009, AMD made a presentation on board the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-12) , at which it announced the ATI Eyefinity technology and the specifications of various GPU series of the Radeon HD 5xxx line. [1] [2]
On September 23, 2009, the first series of Radeon HD 58xx, consisting of HD 5870 and HD 5850 processors, went on sale.
On October 12, 2009, the youngest series, consisting of HD5770 and HD5750 processors, went on sale. [3]
Architecture
The architecturally new family is slightly different from the R700 , but has a greater number of computational units. The chip contains 2.15 billion transistors, which is more than 2 times more than R790 (959 million). However, due to the use of a finer process technology - 40 nm versus 55 nm - the chip area has grown by only a third.
The main part of the chip is 20 SIMD cores, which is twice as large as the previous generation, each of which consists of 16 blocks of superscalar stream processors, a total of 320 superscalar, or 1600 scalar.
This number of stream processors provides a performance of 2.7 TFlops in calculations with single precision and 544 Gflops with double precision.
In addition to doubling the number of stream processors, the number of texturing units was also doubled from 40 to 80.
Multimedia capabilities
ATI Eyefinity provides extended support for multi-monitor configurations. Up to 6 monitors can be connected to one video card (using DisplayPort and a special version of the HD 5870 SIX card). The chip contains 6 built-in TMDS transmitters, and on non-SIX video cards, 4 of them ensure the operation of two Dual Link DVI connectors . Therefore, it is impossible to connect 6 monitors on such video cards. Such configurations can work in both clone modes and desktop extensions.
The AVIVO HD plus UVD 2.2 combination is still responsible for the hardware video decoding for Blu-ray movies. With Catalyst 9.11 and Flash 10.1, UVD can be used to speed up H.264 Flash videos, for example on YouTube and Hulu.
Cards based on the R800 chip support HDMI 1.3a. This has several advantages. The video stream in HDMI 1.3a can be in Deep Color and xvColor format . This gives a greater number of simultaneously displayed colors. A large color depth is supported: 12-bit and 10-bit color formats, wide-gamut xvYCC video signal. Supported formats include Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio , all Blu-ray, AC-3 and DTS audio formats. In fact, this is the first video card that supports Bitstream output for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio to an external decoder. The previous generation of the R700 family of graphics processors only support up to LPCM 7.1 output.
