Story
The film tells the life story of Tom Hanson ( Joseph Gordon-Levitt ) for 500 days starting January 8, when Summer Finn ( Zoe Deschanel ) came to work in the office of the greeting card company where he works (although he studied architecture ). ( Eng. Summer - "summer"). Summer arrives from Michigan and does not immediately notice Tom, while the young man himself immediately understands that this meeting is predetermined by fate.
Their first short conversation will take place in the elevator, when it turns out that Summer loves the same music as Tom ( The Smiths band). After the first meeting, the second follows, after the second one, and soon the couple begins to meet. However, Summer does not want a serious relationship, since he treats them more simply and frivolously than Tom. She declares that she does not believe in love, does not like to “ label ”, that is, she does not like to be someone’s girlfriend. Tom, in turn, understands that he seeks only a serious relationship. This difference in the characters leads to a break in their relationship on the 290th day of meeting.
Tom is depressed, but still goes to the wedding of a colleague, at which Summer meets again. They have a great time, and she invites him to a party on the roof of her house. But at that party, Tom, hoping to restore relations with Summer, discovers that his ex-girlfriend is engaged, which makes him even more depressed. His nerves can’t stand it, he quits with an unloved job and decides to pursue a career as an architect. Meanwhile, Summer is getting married.
The last time Tom and Summer meet at Tom ’s favorite place to the House of Fine Arts , where he brought her when they were together. Relations dramatically changed the views of both. Now Tom is sure that what he believed in does not exist, and Summer realized that love is real and quite possible.
On the last “summer day” (May 23 of next year), Tom is interviewed by an architectural firm. He dates a girl he met before the interview. Her name is Autumn ( Eng. Autumn - "fall"), and for Tom begins the counter "days of autumn."
The narrative of the film is not parallel to the development of the plot: with the help of a day counter, it either runs ahead or returns, showing Tom’s audience either happy during their relationship with Summer, or depressed after the breakup.
