Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA, DHEA) is a multifunctional steroid hormone. DHEA has an effect on androgen receptors.

The synthesis of DHEA in the body takes place with the participation of the enzyme 17-alpha-hydroxylase . Pregnenolone , previously formed from cholesterol , is converted by this enzyme to 17-hydroxypregnenolone, which is converted to dehydroepiandrosterone by the same enzyme.

DHEA, in turn, exposed to other enzymes of the steroidogenic pathway , is converted to androstenediol and androstenedione , as well as to dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate .

DHEA - a natural steroid hormone made from cholesterol in the adrenal glands, in particular, in the layer of the reticular adrenal cortex. It was discovered and then synthesized by the French physician and scientist Etienne-Emile Baulio. Dehydroepiandrosterone is chemically similar to testosterone and estradiol and can be easily converted to it. The production of this hormone reaches its peak in early adulthood, and then begins to decline. Its significance in the state of health and disease is not precisely established.

It is postulated that its replenishment may be useful in the following diseases:

  • diseases of the cardiovascular system
  • diabetes
  • hypercholesterolemia
  • obesity
  • multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • immune system disorders
  • depression
  • osteoporosis
  • Drug Addiction Treatment [1]

However, there is insufficient scientific evidence to recommend the use of DHEA on a wider scale, with the exception of specialized endocrine centers.

DHEA can increase muscle anabolism.

According to a bill introduced in March 2009, the US Senate (S. 641) attempted to classify DHEA as a controlled substance in the category of anabolic steroids. Customer - Charles Gressley ( Republican Senator from Iowa ). Co-customers are Richard Durbin (Illinois Senator Democrat ) and John McCain (Arizona Republican Senator). This bill was sent to the Senate Legislative Committee. In December 2007, Charles Gressley introduced the bill “S. 2470: Dihydroepiandrosterone Abuse Reduction Act 2007, in an attempt to amend the List of Controlled Substances, which would make it unlawful for anyone to sell or create conditions for selling products containing dihydroepiandrosterone to persons under the age of 18, including selling over the Internet without a prescription. Only civil (non-criminal) fines are provided. The bill was read twice and was mentioned in the Senate Legislative Committee.

Currently, the sale of dihydroepiandrosterone is allowed, while at the same time it is banned for use by athletes.

Canada
