Biography

Adolf was the second son of Count Mark Adolph II of the house of Lamarck .

In November 1357, Pope Innocent VI appointed him Bishop of Münster .

In 1362, Adolf concluded an agreement with his elder brother Engelbert III , Earl of Mark, according to which he would inherit the county of Cleve from his maternal uncle Johann of Cleves, since Johann had no children.

In July 1363, Adolf received the post of archbishop of Cologne, but resigned after a year.

In 1368, Adolf succeeded Johann of Cleves and asserted his authority thanks to the support of Engelbert III, who became bishop of Liege.

After the death in 1391 of Engelbert III who left no heirs, Adolf inherited the county of Mark from his brother. In 1393, Adolf transferred Mark to his second son, Dietrich (1374-1398). The third son, Gerhard (1387-1461), became Earl of Mark since 1437, after the death of his older brothers.

After the death of Adolf in 1394, the county of Cleves was inherited by the eldest of his sons, Adolf . The descendants of Adolf ruled Cleves county for six generations.
