Origin
Publius Cornelius belonged to the patrician family of Cornelius . Capitoline fasts call the names of his father and grandfather - Gnei and Publius, respectively [1] ; nevertheless, historiography has suggested that Rufin was the son of a dictator 333 BC. e. of the same name [2] .
Biography
The first mention of Publius Cornelius in the sources dates back to 290 BC. e. Then Rufin was a consul together with the plebeian Mania Curius Dentat [3] . Both consuls were sent against the Samnites . Having won several major battles, they thereby completed the Third Summit War [4] . According to the concluded peace treaty, the formal alliance between Rome and the Samnites was renewed, and the latter, apparently, did not suffer any territorial losses [5] . The author of "On famous people" reports that Dentat celebrated a triumph after this war [6] ; since Pliny the Elder twice calls Publius Cornelius a triumph [7] , it is assumed that the latter was also awarded this honor [8] .
A number of sources report that Rufin served as a dictator , without giving any chronological references [9] [10] [11] . Perhaps this was the case from 284 to 279 BC. e., which accounts for the lacuna in fasts [8] .
By 278 BC e. Publius Cornelia had an ambiguous reputation as an experienced and courageous commander, but at the same time a greedy and thieving person [8] . Due to the Pyrrhic War, which was difficult for Rome at that time , Rufina was nevertheless chosen as consul for the second time (by 277 BC) [12] . Antique authors cite a statement on this subject by the most principled opponent of Publius Cornelius, Guy Fabrice Luscin , to whom a successful applicant came to express gratitude for his support: “There is nothing to thank you for, I just preferred to be robbed than sold into slavery” [13] [ 14] . During his second consulate, Rufin took Croton with the help of military cunning [15] ; however, this year only the second consul, Guy Yuniy Bubulk Brut , received a triumph, so that historiography expressed doubts about the victory of Rufin [8] .
The most famous episode in the biography of Publius Cornelius was his expulsion from the Senate by censor Guy Fabrizius Luscin for violating luxury laws: there were ten pounds of silverware in the house of Rufin [16] [17] [9] [18] [19] .
Descendants
The son of Rufinus was Publius Cornelius , who became the flamin of Jupiter and the first bearer of Sullah's cognom . Great-grandson of Publius Jr. was the dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla [20] .
