Geography

Safonovo is located on the Moscow - Brest railway , 102 km east of Smolensk and 300 km west of Moscow.

The M1 “Belarus” highway passes through the city, the distance to Smolensk is 97 km, to the MKAD - 280 km.

Through the city flows the Vopets river , the Dnieper basin.

History

The city got its name from the village of Safonovo. The name of the village is derived from the calendar name Sophonia , which means: "which God dawns upon."

The decisive role for the development of the district and the city was played by the construction of the Moscow-Brest Railway . On September 20 (October 2, according to a new style), 1870, the first train proceeded from Moscow to Smolensk . A large railway station appeared on Safonovo land, which got its name in the nearest city of Dorogobuzh - Dorogobuzh station. Its construction became the basis for the emergence of the city of Safonov in the future. At the same time as the station Dorogobuzh a substation village arose.

Railway station Safonovo

On October 1, 1929, the Safonovsky district was formed. The basis of it was the Safonov volost of the Dorogobuzh district, the name of the district arose from its name. The center of the Safonovsky district was made the village at the railway station Dorogobuzh. The village of Safonovo, a former volost center, was 10 km from the station. The location of the district center turned out to be completely unconnected with the village of Safonovo, which gave the name to the district and the future city. This toponymic paradox persisted until October 7, 1938 , when the substation village received the status of a working village and the name Safonovo.

In the late 1940s , a rapid industrial development of the region began, based on the large-scale development of brown coal deposits . In 1948, the USSR Council of Ministers adopted a resolution on the creation of a fuel and energy base for the country's northwestern economic region. It was decided to build mines in the vicinity of Safonovo station. In total, it was planned to build 28 mines.

On December 25, 1952, the miners of the mine number 1, called "Smolenskaya", gave out the first tons of coal. Thus began a short, but fundamentally important for the city, era of coal in the Smolensk region. By 1957, 8 mines were built.

The construction of the mines led to the rapid development of the working village of Safonov. In a short time he grew into a real city, on April 8, 1952 Safonov was officially assigned the status of a city of regional subordination [2] . This event has become a major milestone in the history of the region - the stage of development of urban civilization has begun. The birth and rapid growth of the city is associated with the creative work of the Dorogobuzhshahtstroy Trust, created in 1949 (later Dorogobuzhhimstroy). The builders of the trust erected mines, factories, residential buildings in Safonovo. In addition, large industrial and housing construction was carried out in Dorogobuzh , Verkhnedneprovsky , Vyazma and other cities of the Smolensk region.

By the end of the 1950s , it turned out that miscalculations were made in assessing the prospects for industrial development of the Safonovsky brown coal deposit. As a result, it was decided to create industrial enterprises on the basis of the closing mines. This was the beginning of the history of the leading enterprises of the city.

In 1960, the Safonovsky Electric Machine Building Plant, the Teplokontrol and Gidromepribor factories were founded. In Safonov, the light and food industries also developed.

In 1961, the Oryol sewing factory was opened.

In 1962, the Safonovsky Plastics Plant (now the Avangard production association) was founded.

In 1964, the Safonovsky Meat Processing Plant (now Safonovomyasoproduct OJSC) was commissioned [3] .

In 1971, the Safonovsky bakery was founded.

In 1980, the Safonovoloko plant continued its history on a modern industrial basis.

The development of a coal deposit played an outstanding historical role in the fate of not only the Safonovsky Territory. Unpromising Safonovsky coal gave the prospect of industrial development of two districts at once - Safonovsky and Dorogobuzhsky. Thanks to coal mining, the city of Safonovo grew, its leading enterprises were built, the Dorogobuzh State District Power Plant was built , and after it the village of Verkhnedneprovsky and the Dorogobuzh plants.
