Symbolic meaning
In a spiritual sense, saccos recalls that scarlet robe in which Christ was clothed ( John 19: 2-5 ). The bishop , dressed in saccos, is obliged to recall the humiliation and humility of Jesus Christ . The bells hung on the saccos in the likeness of bells on the clothes of the Old Testament high priests mean the evangelism of the word of God coming from the mouth of the bishop. On the saccos there are 33 brooch-buttons (16 on each side and one near the cutout for the head), which remind of the number of years Christ lived on earth. Under the saccos they put on: the episcopal cassock, often called the saccos, epitrachil and belt. Omphor, panagia , pectoral cross , club are put on over the saccos (the strap of the club is put on the bishop's left shoulder under the saccos over the belt).
Dress history
Initially, the Saccos complained to the Byzantine emperors to the Patriarchs of Constantinople and wore them only three times a year (on Easter , Pentecost and Christmas ). In the XIV-XV centuries, the right to wear saccos passes from the Patriarch of Constantinople to other patriarchs and metropolitans . In the Russian Church, saccos has been known since the beginning of the 15th century , when the Kiev Metropolitan Photius brought it with him from Greece . Since the 15th century, appears in the Russian Church as the attire of the metropolitans, since 1589 and the patriarch. In the 17th century, some archbishops were awarded saccos. Since 1702, Peter the Great has granted the saccos some archbishops and bishops , and since 1705 he has become the common clothing of all bishops.
