Biography

Born in the family of a Latvian farm laborer . In childhood he was a shepherd, a laborer. In 1916 he was called up for military service and enlisted in the spare Latvian rifle regiment. He rose to the rank of non-commissioned officer . In March 1917 he joined the RSDLP (b) .

Since November 1917, he commanded a detachment of Latvian riflemen , who in March 1918 was entrusted with the protection of the Kremlin. Commander 4 of the Latvian Rifle Regiment (May 10 - July 29, 1918). Since the summer of 1918, he commanded the 1st Inzen (later 15th Sivash Red Banner) rifle division , formed at the Inza station from the shooters of the 4th Vidzeme Latvian regiment, the Red Guard detachment Popov, the armed workers of Syzran and Samara, the armored train named after V.I. Lenin. According to Latsis, his comrade and fellow countryman Heinrich Zveinek was buried with honors at the Kremlin wall , who died during the fighting in the Donbass .

He held a number of command posts on the Eastern , Southern , South-Western fronts. Parts of Latsis were the most disciplined and devoted strike force of the Bolsheviks. In 1923-1927 - Head and Military Commissioner of the S. S. Kamenev Kiev Joint Military School. Since 1927 - corps commander. In 1926-1932 - the commander of the corps of the university of the Leningrad Military District , in 1930-1932 - the commander of the 16th Rifle Corps.

In 1932 - 1937 - commander of the Special Corps of the Railway Forces of the Red Army . The development and construction of railways in Siberia and the Far East are associated with the name of Latsis. At the same time he was a member of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee , a member of the government of the RSFSR.

He died in 1937 in Khabarovsk from a broken heart . He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow (burial place: old cemetery, at the entrance, wall 68, number 15).

His name is a street in the city of Inza , in which 1 Inzen Rifle Division was formed to fight the Czechoslovak Corps .

The name of Jan Latsis was the railway station in the Primorsky Territory and the street in Vladivostok (now Nerchinskaya Street).
