History
In 1745, in order to replace the dilapidated Catherine’s Church , a wooden Epiphany Church was laid on the Market Square in Yekaterinburg , the construction of which was completed by 1747. In 1755, a chapel was added to the church in honor of the apostles Peter and Paul. In 1770, this aisle was dismantled and transferred to the Ascension Hill, where it was restored as the Ascension Church , and in its place on July 17, 1771, a stone 2-storey cathedral was laid. March 30, 1774 the Epiphany throne on the first floor was consecrated. In 1833, the cathedral acquired the status of a cathedral. In 1906, a monument to Emperor Alexander II was erected next to the temple. The cathedral hosted the most significant events in the life of the city, religious processions, meetings of guests of honor. During the First World War, the upper temple of the cathedral was used as a regimental church of 126 reserve infantry regiment. In January 1930, the temple was closed, and in the summer of that year, it was blown up to obtain building material.
Architecture
The temple building was built in the typical 18th century Baroque style . According to the observations of contemporaries, the Epiphany Cathedral vaguely resembled the Peter and Paul Cathedral of St. Petersburg [2] . The building was 55.5 meters long, 25.6 meters wide, 40.5 meters high, the 5-tier bell tower reached 66.2 meters and about 100 years (before the construction of the Big Chrysostom ) it was the highest architectural construction in the city. With an area of 180 square fathoms, the cathedral accommodated up to 4,500 people. The building was painted in blue.
Interior
The iconostasis of the main temple was 3-tier, the iconostases of all other chapels were 2-tier.
The belfry had 9 bells with a total weight of about 10 tons.
Conflict situations
Since the late 2000s, the leadership of the Yekaterinburg diocese raises the issue of access to the burial places of the Yekaterinburg bishops that were on the site of the cathedral, which gives rise to disputes and conflicts with the city authorities [ significance of fact? ] [3] [4] .
