Biography

Born in a large family 80 km from the capital in the department of Chaco. In 1938, the family moved to Asuncion .

In the years 1940-1950. first with school teachers, and then with friends, he began to practice journalism. Then, until 1962, he taught history. In 1957 he graduated from Asuncion National University with a degree in law .

In 1957 - 1959 was chairman of the Legal Department of the Confederation of Basketball of Paraguay. In 1969-1970, and also in 1974-1977 - President of FC Libertad . In 1971-1973 and in 1979-1985 - President of the Football Association of Paraguay. In 1972-1974 and in 1980-1986 - Vice President of CONMEBOL. Since 1986 - President of CONMEBOL. He was re-elected to this post 6 times.

In 1998-2002 - Member of the FIFA Executive Committee for South America.

Honorary Doctor of the University of Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil ). Honorary Doctor of the National University of San Agustin ( Arequipa , Peru ).

In 2008, he received a second citizenship - Colombia .

During the presidency of Leos, South American teams won three of the seven world championships ( Argentina in 1986 , Brazil in 1994 and 2002 ). Two more times, South Americans played in the finals (Argentina in 1990 and Brazil in 1998 ). In 2010, the Uruguayan national team took fourth place at the World Cup.

One of Asuncion's stadiums is named after Nicholas Leos.

At the end of April 2013, it became known about Leos’s intention to leave his post ahead of schedule, due to his state of health and advanced age [2] . However, unofficially, premature retirement is attributed by journalists to the investigation of corruption in CONMEBOL bodies [3] . The successor to Dr. Leos was Uruguayan Eugenio Figuiredo, who worked for many years as vice president.
