Biography

According to the life, Julitta (Julitta) was a young widow of noble birth, lived in Iconium with her son Kirik. In the persecution of Diocletian, fearing torment, she left all her possessions and, with the three-year-old Kirik, left Iconium, accompanied by two slaves, and lived as an impoverished wanderer, first in Seleucia and then in Tarsus . During the persecution of Christians in Tarsus, Julitta was recognized and brought with her son to the court of the mayor Alexander.

Before the ruler, Julitta confessed herself a Christian. She was separated from her son and scourged. Cyric, seeing his mother’s torment, cried, and then, saying that he was a Christian, demanded that he be allowed to go to his mother. In anger, Alexander threw the child off the stone platform and Kirik died. Iulitta was subjected to new torment (she punched the body with iron teeth, watered wounds with boiling resin ), but she refused to make sacrifices to the pagan gods. Alexander sentenced the saint to beheading , which was done. The bodies of Kirik and Iulitta were left by the executioners without burial outside the city, but Iulitta's slaves secretly buried them.

History of relics and veneration

The relics of Cyric and Iulitta were acquired during the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great at the direction of one of the slaves who buried the saints. They were transferred to Constantinople , where a monastery was founded in their honor. According to the testimony of the pilgrims of the XII-XV centuries, the relics of the saints were in the church of St. Sophia . Their fate after the fall of Constantinople is unknown.

According to another version, the relics of Bishop Amator (388-418) found in Antioch the relics of Kirik and Iulitta and transferred to Auxerre ( France ). [1] It is known that particles of relics were found in the cities of Nevers (France) and Tournai ( Belgium ).

Old Believers venerate Kirik and Julitta as their patrons, considering themselves the same as they persecuted for faith. [2] In Russian folk traditions, the day of memory of Kirik and Iulitta was considered the middle of summer. The following national signs are associated with him: “Do not rely on Kirik and Ulita -you will see maniacs ” , “ Kirikov day, but everything is wet, it pours rain . ” [3]
