Servage

Serv Costumes

Servage ( fr. Servage , from serf ( lat. Servus ) - slave) is a type of feudal dependence of the peasants of medieval Western Europe. He was characterized by a personal connection between the serf ( fr. Serf - serf , from Lat. Servos - slave ) with his liege and a significant restriction of personal and civil rights.

Servas carried heavier duties than other categories of feudal-dependent peasantry (unlimited corvee , arbitrary talia ), could not dispose of their identity and property. At the end of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries , the liberation of servov from personal dependence began (for redemption ).

Sometimes servov called the serfs of France. However, this is not true. A. Ya. Gurevich , for example, indicates that “in the XI-XIII centuries. in one document among the signs of the servant was not mentioned attachment to the ground " [1] .

In foreign literature, serfs in pre-reform Russia are also often called servami.
