Story
Actors of the seedy theater Shchepin and Ugryumov set off to seek the best share in the fortress theater of the wealthy Prince Skalinsky. The prince warmly welcomes comedian Ugryumov, famous for his talent, to Shchepin and his comrade. The prince immediately offers Shchepin the role of a judge in the play The Forty-Thief. Shchepin is struck by the great talent of Aneta, the leading woman.
Schepin is trying to meet with the actress, and although the prince’s servants initially did not let him to Aneta, he manages to get the prince’s permission to meet. She told Schepin her story. She used to belong to another landowner who appreciated her as an actress. Even then, Skalinsky tried to buy the actress, but the landowner resolutely refused. Soon he died, having previously written free actors of his theater, but his heir, flattered by the profits proposed by the prince for the actors of the troupe, bribing attorneys, destroyed the free ones.
Aneta went to the prince. The prince did not keep his promise to present the actress to the best theaters in Moscow and St. Petersburg. He rejected the proposal of the directorate of the imperial theaters, who wanted to buy the actress, and instead offered Aneta to become his mistress. Faced with a decisive rebuff, the prince decides to make the life of the actress unbearable. In retaliation, Aneta accepts the courtship of her longtime and secret admirer Stepan.
The actress’s monologue is interrupted by Stepan. He is taken to recruits, and he wants to say goodbye to his beloved. But, despite Shchepin’s intervention, Stepan was not allowed to see Aneta for the last time.
Shchepin, despite the prince's generous promises, decides to return to his old theater. He is informed that Aneta tried to commit suicide. She is at death and explains to Schepin the reason for her act - she does not wish her future child a servile share. Shchepin in a theater with a large crowd of people reports that there will be no performance, the main actress died, not wanting to live in captivity.
Shchepin and Ugryumov leave for their old theater.
