It came from the Beck branch of the Holstein-Sonderburg line of the Oldenburg dynasty . The third son (fifth child) is Friedrich Ludwig (1653-1728), Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Bek (from 1719) and his wife Louise Charlotte, Princess of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (1658-1740). Parents were cousins.
Through the Danish king Frederick I - six-cousin uncle Peter III .
In 1723 he converted to Catholicism .
The ducal throne inherited on May 6, 1757 , when his childless nephew Friedrich ( Eng. Frederick William III, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck ), Prussian colonel , was killed in the battle of Prague ( Seven Years War ).
In 1762 he was granted by Emperor Peter III to the Russian Field Marshals . In the Russian military service was not. The famous historian D.N. Bantysh-Kamensky believed that the duke and several others were
awarded this honorary title due to noble origin.

Family
In 1730, in Dresden, he married Countess Anna Carolina Ozhelska ( 1707 - 1769 ), the illegitimate daughter of the King of Poland , Elector of Saxony Augustus the Strong . Three years later they divorced. Sole child:
