Bittern is the common name for a number of birds of the subfamily Botaurinae of the heron family. The Russian name is related to the words "howl" and "yell" - the loud voice of representatives of the genus Big Bittern ( lat. Botaurus ) resembles the roar of a bull (for the same feature of a large bittern in Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian languages, the bittern is called a bull , that is, a bull , and in Bulgarian water Bik , water bull). The small bittern is named for outward resemblance to the big bittern, and other species of the Small bittern are called the bittern for outward similarity and kinship with the small bittern. In the Belarusian language, the name of the big drinks - “ boogie ” refers to the entire subfamily Botaurinae .
