Biography

Krylov’s grave at the Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow.

Porfiry Krylov was born in the village of Schelkunovo (now - Bogoroditsky district ). He studied at the factory art studio under the direction of G.M.Shegal, then entered the Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops ( VKHUTEMAS ), where from 1921 to 1928 he studied under A.A. Osmerkin , A.V. Shevchenko , and in graduate school under P. P. Konchalovsky .

P.N. Krylov died on May 15, 1990 . He was buried in Moscow at the Novodevichy cemetery (plot number 10).

The son of Porfiry Nikitich, Andrei, also became an artist.

Creativity

Already in the 1920s , Krylov painted portraits, landscapes, still lifes and the contemporary genre with equal interest. The motives of his paintings are simple, but in this simplicity Krylov reveals that substantial subtle beauty that makes up the charm of everything that can be seen only by a thoughtful look. He conveys the thrill of life itself in the paintings. Even a blooming bouquet of wildflowers Krylov writes in a kind of whirlwind. It complicates and emphasizes the contrast in drawing and color and at the same time combines them with intense dense painting.

He worked on large genre paintings with his inseparable comrades M.V. Kupriyanov and N. A. Sokolov . Together they made up the famous creative group Kukryniksy and the three of them conducted intense journalistic work. Caricature, book illustration, historical paintings and landscapes - all genres of artists are marked by brilliant success.

The artistry of the Kukryniksy was noted by critics in the 1930s. The key to their triumph was the unity of views and taste, as well as great personal friendship. However, the artist created many independent works, chamber in nature. He traveled a lot and wrote in the open air. His favorite places on the Oka, in Polenov, Kostroma, at the Academic dacha, in Abramtsevo, Koktebel. The artist’s landscapes attest to his deep sense of nature. He attaches importance not only to the general atmosphere of the landscape, its light, color, rhythmic structure, but also to the subject composition of the image that underlies the composition. Beautiful sketches written in Bulgaria, Italy, France. Krylova is very occupied with soft gliding or sharp strokes of light, finally, the light-air environment itself. The artist’s still lifes are unusually subtle and picturesque.

The works of P. N. Krylov were exhibited at many art exhibitions in Russia and abroad. They are in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery , the State Russian Museum , the Art Museum named after P.N. Krylov in Tula, in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and other foreign museums and private collections.
