Shinee ( cor. 샤이니 , Jap. シ ャ イ ニ ー ; pronounced “sainy” or “blue”, styled as SHINee ) is a South Korean boyband , founded in 2008 by SM Entertainment . The team consists of four participants: Onu (who is also the leader), Khi , Minho and Themin . The main vocalist of the group, Jonhyon , died in December 2017.

SHINee was presented as a boyband, performing songs in the genre of modern rhythm and blues with the aim of being trendsetters in all areas of music, fashion, dance, etc. They debuted in May 2008 with the replay mini-album and the same-name single “누난 너무 예뻐 (Replay) ”. The group attracted attention due to the spread of the fashion trend among students and schoolchildren, which the media eventually called the “SHINee trend”. In August of the same year, their first Korean studio album, The Shinee World , was released, for which they won the Best New Album of the Year nomination at the Golden Disk Awards . SHINee secured popularity in the Korean scene, followed by the release of the singles Ring Ding Dong and Lucifer, which became hits. "Ring Ding Dong" became number 1 on the Korean charts and gained popularity throughout Asia. Lucifer received the Best Dance nomination at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in 2010 for its outstanding and outstanding choreography. In 2012, the fourth mini-album Sherlock was released, which became the fifth best-selling album of the year (more than 180 thousand copies sold). The group was also included in the list of the “Most Influential Korean Celebrities” according to Forbes two times - in 2014 and 2016.
In mid-2011, SHINee signed a contract with EMI Records Japan to begin the official promotion on the Japanese stage. The Japanese version of Replay sold over 91,000 copies in the first week, while total sales exceeded 100,000, which was a record figure for debut Japanese singles among all Korean groups at that time. The debut Japanese studio album The First was released on December 7, and soon, like the debut single, it received RIAJ gold certification for sales that overcame 100,000 copies. In the same year, SHINee also held a Japanese premium meeting at the Abbey Road studio , becoming the first Asian artists to perform there. Two years later, they released the second Japanese album, Boys Meet U , and in subsequent years a number of successful Japanese releases were also released: I'm Your Boy (2014), D × D × D (2016) and Five (2017).
SHINee are recognized as one of the best Korean live-sound groups, known for their synchronized and complex choreography; in the “Best Dance” category at the Mnet Asian Music Awards, they won three times: in 2012 (“Sherlock”), 2013 (“Dream Girl”) and 2015 (“View”) years. Although the band’s distinctive musical style is modern R & B, they are known for their experiments, including genres such as funk-rock , hip-hop and EDM . The popularity of SHINee in their native country provided them with a large number of awards and the title of “princes of Korean music ” [1] .

Career
2008-10: Debut, The Shinee World , Popularity Growth and Lucifer
Before the debut, SHINee SM Entertainment presented its new boyband as a group performing songs in the genre of modern rhythm and blues with the aim of being trendsetters in all areas of music, fashion, dance, etc. [2] . The name of the group is a combination of the word “shine” ( Russian shine ) and the suffix “ee”, meaning “one who spreads light” [3] . The debut mini-album Replay [4] [5] was released on May 25, 2008, which debuted in the top 10 of the Korean album chart [6] and reached a peak of 8 lines [7] , sales for the first half of the year amounted to 17 975 copies [8 ] . On the day the album was released, SHINee also debuted on the Inkigayo stage [9] .
In June, SHINee won the “Newcomer of the Month” nomination at the Cyworld Digital Music Awards ; in August, they won the “New Hot Star” nomination at the Mnet Choice Awards [10] . In the same month, their first studio album, The SHINee World , was released, which debuted in the top 3 Korean album charts, and sales totaled 30,000 copies [11] . The main single "산소 같은 너 (Love Like Oxygen)", which is a cover of Martin Hedegaard's "Show The World", was originally written by a team of Danish composers such as Thomas Troelsen, Remee and Lucas Sekon [12] . On September 18, the band first won the M! Countdown , which marked their first trophy of a musical show since the debut [13] . On October 3, SHINee performed as one of the representatives of South Korea at the Asia Song Festival music festival, where they won the Best Newcomers nomination along with the Japanese group Berryz Kobo [14] . The Style Icon Awards was held on October 30, where they received the Best Style Award [15] . On the same day, the reissue of their album The SHINee World was released, containing three new songs: “Forever or Never”, a remix of “Love Should Go On” and a new single “Amigo”. “A.Mi.Go” is an abbreviated version of the Korean phrase “arymdown minenelly chonakhamon kosenhand” ( cor. 미녀 를 좋아 하면 고생 한다 ) , which can be translated as “you will suffer if you fall in love with a beauty” [16] .
In November, SHINee attended the tenth anniversary ceremony of the Mnet Asian Music Awards , where they won the “Best New Men's Band” nomination, beating such newcomers as U-KISS , 2PM , 2AM and Mighty Mouth [17] . At the twenty-third Golden Disk Awards they won the “Best New Album of the Year” award for The SHINee World [18] .
In February 2009, SHINee, along with Davichi and Mighty Mouth, won the Best Newcomers nomination at the Eighteenth Seoul Music Awards [19] . Romeo’s second mini-album was released on May 25, and the single “Juliette” a week earlier [20] . The song is an instrumental remake of the single "Deal with It" by Corbin Blue . For the first time, SHINee performed “Juliette” in June at the Music Bank , where they were also able to take first place [21] .
The digital version of the third mini-album 2009, Year of Us [22] was released on October 19, three days later physical copies went on sale [23] . The single Ring Ding Dong was released in digital format on October 14 and instantly occupied the tops of the music charts, gaining great popularity throughout Asia. In December, SHINee and Super Junior were awarded for their popularity at the Golden Disk Awards [24] .
July 19, 2010 was released the second studio album Lucifer , conquered the top of the charts in digital and physical sales. The songs “were chosen more carefully than ever” and “the album gives listeners a great chance to experience the diversity of musical characters and the more mature vocals of the participants” [25] . On July 23, the first performance at the Music Bank took place. [26] For outstanding choreography, Lucifer received a nomination at the Mnet Asian Music Awards [27] . Lucifer was the sixth best-selling album in 2010, sales amounted to more than 120 thousand copies [28] . On August 21, SHINee took part in the SMTown Live '10 World Tour [29] . In October, the reissue of Lucifer - Hello was released. On December 26, the beginning of the first concert tour, SHINee World in Tokyo , was confirmed [30] .
2011−12: Japanese debut, The First and Sherlock
On January 1, 2011, SHINee performed in Seoul at the Olympic Arena as part of SHINee World; during the year several concerts were also given in Japan [31] . On January 25 and 26, the group took part in the SMTown Live '10 World Tour Japanese branch, and later held concerts in Zenith ( Paris ), Tokyo Dome (Tokyo) and Madison Square Garden ( New York ). [32] On June 22, the Japanese version of the single «Replay», which marked the debut of SHINee in Japan [33] . Sales in the first week amounted to more than 91 thousand copies, and soon Replay received a gold certification from RIAJ for achieving 100 thousand copies sold. At that time, it was a record sales figure for the debut Japanese single among all Korean groups [34] .
On June 19, SHINee became the first Asian artists to perform at the Abbey Road studio . On July 22, the first Japanese tour began, during which they held several shows throughout the country. On August 28 and October 12, Japanese versions of Juliette and Lucifer were released [35] [36] . On August 9, the group took part in a charity event to help children from Africa [37] . In November, SHINee was invited to the Korean Film Festival, held in London, where they performed at the opening, giving an hour-long concert, tickets for which were sold out within a few minutes [38] . It also made them the first Korean artists to host the event in London.
The First Studio Debut Japanese Album was released on December 7 [39] . It included five new songs in addition to the seven previously released Japanese versions of Korean singles. The standard version also contained the Stranger soundtrack for the Japanese drama, 6 Strangers. The First received a gold certification from RIJA for sales that overcame the mark of 100 thousand copies [40] . On December 8, Themin, Onu, and Khi made their debut as screenwriters and produced a travelogue, Children of the Sun, about their trip to Barcelona . Participants took photos and wrote comments on their own. SHINee also took part in the recording of the 2011 Winter SMTown - The Warmest Gift album with a cover version of " Last Christmas ". The album was released on December 13th. December 24, a concert was held in the hall of the Tokyo International Forum . Just spent three shows, attendance was 15 thousand people. They performed with six songs, including the debut Japanese singles Replay (Kimi wa Boku no Everything), Lucifer and To Your Heart. The fourth Korean mini-album Sherlock was released on digital media on March 19, 2012, the same physical version was released on March 21. According to the results of the year, he became the fifth best-selling album (more than 180 thousand copies sold) [42] . On March 26, SHINee became one of the owners of SM Entertainment shares, each received 340 shares (about $ 13,600 for each participant). The Japanese version of Sherlock was released on May 16 [43] . On April 25, the group began its first large-scale Japanese tour, SHINee World 2012. A total of 20 concerts took place: in Fukuoka , Sapporo , Nagoya , Osaka , Kobe , Tokyo and Hiroshima [44] . For the entire show, attendance was 200 thousand people, which was a record figure for the debut Japanese tour [45] . On May 20, SHINee took part in the SMTown Live World Tour III at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California [46] . The second concert tour of SHINee World II started on July 21 with concerts at the Olympic arena in Seoul.
The original Japanese single "Dazzling Girl" was released on October 10th. Sales for the first week amounted to 97,111 copies; it also became a theme for the Sukkuri Show [47] . On November 19, SHINee and actor Kim Soo Hyun received the Ministry of Culture award at the Korean Popular Culture & Arts Award at the Olympic Park [48] . At the Mnet Asian Music Awards, they won the Best Dance nomination for choreography for the Korean single "Sherlock (Clue + Note)". The ballad Japanese single 1000nen, Zutto Soba ni Ite ... and the SHINee World 2012 live album were released on December 12 [49] .
2013−14: Dream Girl , Why So Serious? , Boys Meet U , Everybody And I'm Your Boy
On January 15, 2013, SHINee attended the twenty-seventh Golden Disk Awards awards ceremony , where they won the Popularity Award, which they had previously taken away in 2009 and 2010. They also won the Disc Bonsan for the single “Shelock”, which marked their second victory after winning with “Lucifer” in 2010 [50] . On February 3, MBC announced the launch of a special show dedicated to Lunar New Year and called “One fine day with SHINee”, the broadcast of which began a week later. According to the program's plot, participants visited various countries of their choice without managers, only with a film crew. Onyu visited Thailand , Jonhyun visited Japan, Khee and Minho visited England , and Themin went to Switzerland [51] .
The third Korean studio album consisted of two versions: Dream Girl - The Misconceptions of You , which was released on February 19, and Why So Serious? - The Misconceptions of Me , released April 29 [52] [53] . The main single of the first part, “Dream Girl” - is an acid house genre track with elements of funk . The title track of the second part, “Why So Serious?” Is a funk-rock dance song [54] . The compilation The Misconceptions of Us was also released, containing two new songs: “Selene 6.23” and “Better Off” [55] .
The Japanese single "Fire" was released on March 13 [56] . On June 26, the second Japanese studio album, Boys Meet U [57] , was released, and on August 21, the self-titled single, including the Japanese version of “Dream Girl” [58] , was released. The second Japanese tour of SHINee World 2013 in Saitama started on June 28th.
On October 14th, the fifth Korean mini-album, Everybody , was released. On November 6, SM Entertainment announced a special concert week of SMTown Week, which SHINee opened on December 21. In November, the band won the Artist of the Year nomination at the Melon Music Awards , based on digital sales and online voting. This was the first major award (or desan) of SHINee since its debut [59] .
On February 24, 2014, SHINee was selected as Gangnam's ambassadors [60] . On March 8, the third concert tour of SHINee World III started, where more concerts in Latin America were added [61] . The SHINee World II DVD Edition was released on April 2.
On June 25, Universal Music Japan released the tenth Japanese single "Lucky Star", which became the first Japanese release of SHINee under the EMI Records label [62] . September 24 was released the third Japanese studio album I'm Your Boy . [63] . From September to December, the third Japanese tour was held, the final concerts of which were held on 14 and 15 March 2015 in Tokyo Dome [64] .
A DVD edition of SHINee World II was released on December 11, containing two CDs [65] . On December 15, SM Entertainment announced that SHINee was able to completely sell off the World Memorial Hall in Kobe, from 13 to 14 December their concerts were attended by 16 thousand people. Thus, the group successfully completed its Japanese tour, the total number of attendance was 200 thousand. 2015: Odd , DxDxD
On February 17, 2015, SHINee became the only Korean celebrities invited to the Chinese program broadcast in honor of the lunar New Year - Chun Jie Wan Hui . This show also had the highest ratings over the past 12 years among other Chinese programs shown at the same time [67] .
From May 15 to 17, SHINee held a three-day SHINee World IV concert in Seoul, where they presented songs from the upcoming album [68] . The premiere of the fourth Korean studio album Odd took place on May 18, and a video for the single “View” was released, written and produced by LDN Noise and Jonhyun. “View” was the most viewed K-Pop video in the world in May [69] . Odd made his debut at number 9 on the Billboard Heatseers Albums Chart and first on the Billboard World Albums Chart ; US sales totaled over 2 thousand copies [70] . The reissue of Married To the Music was released on August 3 and contained four new songs [71] . At the end of the year, Gaon released a list of best-selling albums, where SHINee became only one of five men's groups, hitting the digital chart for 41st place. They hit the streaming chart twice, finding themselves at 65 and 78 places [72] [73] [74] .
The eleventh and twelfth Japanese singles “Sing Your Song” and “DxDxD” were released on October 25 and December 13; “DxDxD” was later added to the eponymous Japanese album [75] . On January 1, 2016, the release of the fourth Japanese studio album DxDxD [76] took place .
2016-present: 1 of 1 , Five , Jonghön's death, SHINee THE BEST FROM NOW ON and The Story of Light
On September 4, 2016, SHINee held their fifth concert of SHINee World V in Seoul. There they performed several new songs from the fifth studio album 1 of 1 , which was released on October 5th. 1 of 1 was released in the retro genre of the 1980s and 1990s [77] . On November 15, a reissue of 1 and 1 was released, including five new compositions [78] . On December 21, SHINee released their fourteenth Japanese single “Winter Wonderland” [79] , which debuted from the second spot of the Japanese Oricon charts based on sales results for the first week [80] .
On February 22, 2017, SHINee released their fifth studio Japanese album, Five [81] . As a promotion, they went on the SHINee World 2017 Japanese tour, which was held from January 28 to April 30 in ten Japanese cities, and the total number of concerts reached twenty-five. In the first half of the year, they entered the top 10 by the number of spectators who attended their concerts - 338,238 people. They also were at the highest position among all Korean artists in this list [82] . In September, several more concerts were held in Tokyo Dome and Osaka Dome [83] .
On December 18, it became known that Jonhyun committed suicide [84] . The funeral was held on December 21 with the participation of the other members of the group, as well as other colleagues of SHINee and Jonghön: Girls' Generation , Ayu , Super Junior , etc. [85]
On January 9, 2018, SHINee confirmed that they would hold the previously-appointed Japanese concerts of SHINee WORLD THE BEST 2018 ~ FROM NOW ON in memory of Jonghön [86] . On February 17, at the concert in Osaka Dome, they presented the songs “Everytime” and “From Now On”. On March 19, the full Japanese version of From Now On [87] was posted on the group’s official Japanese account on Instagram . On April 18, a new Japanese album 「SHINee THE BEST FROM NOW ON」 [88] was released . On the day of its release in Japan, the official color of the SHINee fandom was the five largest towers: the Tokyo TV Tower , the Kobe Port Tower, the Nagoya TV Tower, the Fukuoka Tower and the Sapporo TV Tower [89] . In the daily album chart Oricon SHINee THE BEST FROM NOW ON debuted from the first place, sales amounted to more than 62 thousand copies, which is the best indicator among the Japanese releases of the group [90] . In the global iTunes collection also won first place [91] .
On May 15, concept teasers were presented for the upcoming The Story of Light comeback, which is timed to the group's decade [92] [93] . On May 27, the group held a special fantization [94] . On May 28, the mini-album The Story Of Light, Ep.1 was released with the single "데리러 가 (Good Evening)" [95] . The album led iTunes over 25 countries. On May 30, SHINee appeared in the release of the popular Star Radio talk show, where they first shared their thoughts on their return after Jonghön’s death: “[...] We have worked together for so many years, so the result would be that we could not get through it. The Story of Light, Ep.2 was released on June 11 with the single "I Want You" [99] . According to the participants, the video “I Want You” became the group's gaze at themselves, while “데리러 가 (Good Evening)” was an interpretation of how others look at SHINee [100] . On June 21, they won a victory on M! Countdown , gaining the maximum number of points - 11,000, which was one of the best results among Korean groups [101] . June 25, the release of The Story of Light, Ep.3 , which completed the trilogy. The single "네가 남겨둔 말 (Our Page)" was written by the participants in collaboration with Kenzie, and is a dedication for Jonghön [102] . The album also included a special track “Lock You Down”, in which Jon Joon took part. On July 26, SHINee held a special fanmit in Tokyo Dome [103] .
On August 1, the fifteenth Japanese single "Sunny Side" was released [104] . On November 9, the agency confirmed that Onu will be enrolled in the army service in active troops on December 10, the place and time of the enrollment will not be disclosed [105] [106] .
