Du Yuesheng (杜月笙, Du Yuesheng), known by the name " Bolsheuhuyu Du ", ( August 21, 1888 - August 16, 1951 ) is a Chinese gangster , one of the leaders of the Green Gang in Shanghai .

Joining the Green Gang at a young age, Du caught the eye of the mistress of Green Gang leader Ryaboy Juan , Miss Quay, who helped him make a career. At first, Du monitored the supply of opium to the warehouses, then Ryaboy Huang gave him the opium factory in Shanghai's French concession to manage.

Over time, Du made connections, from the Chinese courts to the French consulate. He borrowed large sums of money to the Europeans, and then turned the debtors around as he wanted.

Du became the leader of the Green Gang in 1924 after the military governor of Shanghai, Lu Yongxiang, ordered the arrest of Puffy Huang and demanded a ransom for his release [1] . Du made the required amount for the "teacher", but Ryaboy Juan lost authority in the eyes of his subordinates and he had to hand over the reins of Du.

Soon, Bolsheukhy Du became known as "Jung Shi" or "master of the underworld."

Led by Du, the Green Gang was involved in casinos, racketeering, and brothels. But the main source of income for the criminal group was the illegal trade in opium, which has been officially banned since 1917.

The larger-eared Du played a major role in reconciling Chiang Kai-shek and the leaders of Shanghai's foreign concessions. When the National Revolutionary Army occupied the Chinese part of Shanghai in 1927, thousands of armed Red Guards remained in the working districts. Bolsheukhiy Du invited foreigners and Chiang Kai-shek to get rid of them and took on the "dirty work". Having received passes, trucks and weapons from the chairman of the Municipal Council of Stirling Fessenden , the people of Du killed about 4 thousand people in one night. In reward for the Shanghai massacre, Chiang Kai-shek appointed Du as chairman of the opium bureau, giving the latter virtually unlimited opportunities in the drug trade.

Bolsheukhy Du helped the nationalist government with finances and in exchange got the opportunity to control unions. During the war with Japan, Du engaged in speculation in the occupied territory.

After the war ended, relations between Du and Chiang Kai-shek deteriorated. Corruption and crimes committed by Bolsheukha’s assistants, including his relatives, undermined the Kuomintang’s authority. When Chiang Kai-shek's son Jiang Jingguo launched an anti-corruption campaign in Shanghai in the late 1940s, Du's relatives were the first to be arrested. However, Du managed to defend them by intimidating Chiang Kai-shek by exposing the dark affairs of his own kin ( Kun Xiangxi clan).

When in 1949 the nationalist government was forced to flee to Taiwan , Du refused to follow him and left for Hong Kong .

Du Yuesheng's fifth wife was the Beijing Opera actress Meng Xiaodong [2]
