Overview and Features
The main goal of the Simutrans game is to provide an efficient transport system for transporting passengers, goods and mail from the departure point to the destination as quickly as possible and with a minimum amount of transport in the chain. It is necessary to constantly develop your company and prevent its bankruptcy .
Simutrans has a number of production chains that are connected to other chains. For example, a coal mine produces coal for coal-fired power plants , and an oil derrick produces oil for oil-fired power plants. Electricity supply allows to increase production. Passengers can travel between different cities and tourist attractions, changing from one mode of transport to another.
Simutrans can currently have up to 6 computer rivals . The terrain in Simutrans is freely variable. In the game there is a change of day and night, as well as a change of seasons. Almost all types of transport exist in Simutrans: buses , trucks , trains , ships , planes , monorails, trams .
Types of Transport
- The truck . It moves on roads, carries a small amount of cargo (except for passengers), cheap, brings little profit, stops for trucks are used as the end points of the route .
- The bus . It moves along roads, carries a small number of passengers, it is cheap, it brings little profit, bus stops are used as the end points of the route.
- Tram . It moves on rails, carries a small number of passengers, it is cheap, it brings little profit, tram stops are used as the end points of the route.
- The train . It moves on rails, can transport the largest amount of cargo and passengers, has an average price, brings the largest profit, and railway stations are used as the end points of the route.
- The plane . It moves through the air; capacity varies by model; the most expensive for the price, brings average profit, airports are used as the end points of the route.
- The ship . It moves through water, carries a large number of cargo, is not very expensive, brings average profit, and docks are used as the end points of the route.
- Monorail . It moves along magnetic rails, it has a speed of up to 160 km / h, and a maglev speed of 400 km / h.
Types of Cargo
There are several types of cargo in the game (the most advantageous is the transportation of passengers). Unlike Transport Tycoon, different vehicles are used for different types of cargo. Cargoes are divided into several groups (bulk cargo, piece goods , etc.). Here are some types of cargo:
- Passengers
- post office
- Coal
- Iron ore
- Steel
- Cars
- Oil
- Gas
- Plastic
- Books
- Paper
- Tree
- Boards
- Furniture
- Corn
- Milk
- Flour
- A fish
- Cotton
- clothing

Setup
To run the game, you need the Simutrans executable and a graphics package that contains game objects . Over the years, many sets of graphics have been created [4] .
Simutrans game can be easily expanded and modified. Simple changes can be made by editing the configuration file . Since the objects in the game consist of a simple image and a file with a brief description, it is very easy to add houses, trains and other objects to the game. The player can also add his own map or list of cities.
Criticism
The American site GameDaily considers Simutrans one of the best free games, emphasizing the logical system for routing passengers and cargo to their destination, worthy opponents, and supporting a custom set of rules. However, the game has been criticized for not always finding the right path for vehicles, especially when there are alternative routes [2] .
