Biography
Philip Feodosievich Zhmachenko was born on November 26, 1895 in the village of Mogilno, now the village of Polesskoye, Korosten district, Zhytomyr region, in a peasant family. Ukrainian . In 1906 he graduated from a rural school, after graduation he worked as a worker in rail transport . In 1915, he was drafted into the army as a private . He participated in the battles of the First World War .
Since 1917, the Red Guard , joined the ranks of the CPSU (b) / CPSU . In the Red Army - since 1918 . Participated in the Civil War , company commander , squadron . Since 1921, the commissar of the regiment , he graduated from the School of Red Elders in Kharkov . In 1924 - 1926 he was appointed deputy head of the School of Red Elders for political affairs. After studying at the courses "Shot" , since 1926 the regiment commander. In 1937 - 1938 the commander of the rifle division . In June 1938 he was arrested on a false denunciation. Until July 1939 was in custody. Released due to lack of corpus delicti. Restored in the Red Army. In November 1939, he was appointed chief of staff of the Kharkov Military District . Since March 1941, the commander of the 67th Rifle Corps of the Headquarters Reserve of the High Command, bore the military rank of brigade commander .
World War II
In July 1941, the 67th Rifle Corps became part of the 21st Army of the Western Front and, under the command of the brigade commander F.F. Zhmachenko, participated in the Battle of Bobruisk . In mid-July 1941, he was replaced as commander by K. N. Galitsky and recalled to command 21. In July 1941, he commanded the 42nd Infantry Division , was wounded, and until September was cured.
From September 1941 - Deputy Commander of the 38th Army of the South-Western Front , from 9/11/1941 - Major General. In February-May 1942, commander of the 3rd Army of the Bryansk Front . In September 1943 he was appointed commander of the 47th Army of the Voronezh Front .
From October 1943 until the end of the war he commanded the 40th Army . Troops under the command of F.F. , Iasi-Chisinau , Bucharest-Arad, Debrecen, Budapest, Banska-Bystric , Bratislava-Brnovsk, Prague offensive operations. They liberated Romania , Hungary and Czechoslovakia . In October 1943, for the crossing of the Dnieper and holding the bridgehead south of Kiev , F.F. Zhmachenko was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union .
October 20, 1943 F.F. Zhmachenko was awarded the military rank of lieutenant general, May 29, 1945 - colonel general .
Post-war period
At the end of World War II, Colonel General F.F. Zhmachenko continued to command the 40th Army, then was appointed deputy commander of the Central Group of Forces in Austria . In 1947 he graduated from the Higher Academic Courses at the Military Academy of the General Staff . Since 1949, the deputy commander of the Belarusian military district, since November 1953 - in the same position in the Carpathian military district. In 1955 - 1960 - Chairman of the Central Committee of the DOSAAF of the Ukrainian SSR . Since 1960, retired.
In honor of F.F. Zhmachenko named a street in the city of Kiev .
