Biography
Born in France, in the family of a Brazilian admiral, studied in England and Switzerland. In 1917 he moved to Brazil, where he graduated from the school of fine arts. In the late 1920s, he collaborated with the modernist G. Varshavchik ; in 1930 he headed the school. Costa was a good teacher, among his closest students can be called O. Niemeyer . Of Costa's works of the 30s, the most famous is the building of the Ministry of Education and Health in Rio de Janeiro (Gustavo Capanema Palace). It already showed Le Corbusier's influence (he took part in the project at the initial stage), but there are also borrowings from the traditional colonial style, functionalist breeze salts are adjacent to azulejo tiles.
In the thirties and forties, Costa created several more projects: a pavilion at the international fair in New York (together with Niemeyer), the current Russian consulate in Rio, a park in Laranjeiras. In 1952, together with Corbusier, he designed the Maison de Brasil (Brazilian House) project on the University campus of Paris.
In 1957, Costa submitted to the competition his project for the new capital, the city of Brasilia , which brought him worldwide fame (for more details see Brasilia # Architectural Features ). In 1960, he was elected professor at Harvard University . After that, the architect did not create many projects, focusing on work at the Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage.
He died in 1998, leaving behind two daughters.
