History and Celebration

“The Day of Veterans of the Customs Service” is celebrated on May 29 not by accident: on that very day in 1918 a decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR “On the differentiation of the rights of central and local Soviet authorities to collect duties and on the regulation of the activities of local customs institutions” was issued . In fact, this day is the birthday of the Soviet customs service. Until the collapse of the USSR , on May 29, in memory of this event, the Day of the Soviet Customs Officer was celebrated in the Soviet Union [2] .

On June 10, 1999, the executive committee of the All-Russian Union of Veterans of the Customs Service adopted a resolution according to which a new holiday was established in the Russian Federation - "Day of Veterans of the Customs Service". The Executive Council of the All-Union High Transport Customs Union noted that this was done “in connection with the numerous proposals received from veteran organizations of customs authorities, veterans of the customs service in order to preserve traditions and ensure communication and continuity of generations of customs officers”. At that time, the backbone of Russian veteran organizations consisted of veterans who served in the “ land of soviets ”, so it is not surprising that for this professional holiday, veterans had already chosen their usual date - the 29th of May.

Since the beginning of the third millennium, on this day, almost all customs divisions of the federal customs service have organized solemn celebrations at which customs veterans are honored. Events are usually accompanied by speeches by honored veterans, presentation of government awards and insignia of the FCS, cash prizes, organization of competitions and concerts [3] .

In addition to the “Day of Veterans of the Customs Service”, Russian customs officers have another professional holiday: the Day of the Customs Officer of the Russian Federation , which is celebrated on October 25 and timed to coincide with the appearance in 1653 of the Unified Customs Charter in the Russian Empire , which became a derivative of the decree of the Emperor Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov on the collection of customs duties "in Moscow and Russian cities" [4]
