Biography
USSR
Born in Krasnoyarsk , grew up in Novgorod [4] . Grandson of French emigrant Charlotte Lemonnier [5] , who lived in Russia since the revolution of 1917 [6] , who taught him French [7] . Father - Yaroslav Mikhailovich Makin, philologist, author of articles and poems [8] [9] , head of the Novgorod branch of Lenizdat [4] . Mother - Mira Andreyevna Makina (1929-?), An expert in the history of Russian literature [10] , doctor of philological sciences [11] , professor of the department of Russian and foreign literature of the Novgorod Pedagogical Institute . In total, the family had three children.
He studied at the Gorky school number 1. At the age of 15, he received a copyright certificate on the invention of an asymmetric multivibrator [12] . He graduated from the philological faculty of Moscow State University , taught at the department of the French language at the Novgorod Pedagogical Institute [13] . In 1985 he defended the thesis of a candidate of philological sciences [14] .
Emigration
In 1988, during a trip to the teacher exchange program in France, he asked for political asylum , which was granted to him [6] . After that, he visited Russia only once - in 2001, accompanying French President Jacques Chirac [15] . For some time he lived in a crypt at the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris [16] [7] [17] .
In France, Makin worked part time on Russian lessons and in his free time wrote novels in French. Making sure that publishers are skeptical of the prose of the Russian émigré, he began to issue his first two novels (“Daughter of the Hero of the Soviet Union” and “Time of the Amur River”) as translations from Russian. The third novel “The French Testament” ( 1995 ) came to the head of a well-known publishing house and was published in a significant circulation [18] .
In 1995, he received the prestigious Goncourt Prize , as well as the Goncier Prize awarded by the Lyceum students and the Medici Prize . The novel was translated into 35 languages, including Russian, and made the author famous. In the same year, the writer was granted French citizenship. In the Sorbonne, Makin defended his thesis "The Poetics of Nostalgia in Bunin's Prose" [17] .
In one of his interviews, Makin noted: “I was saved by the fact that I received a good Soviet hardening ... endurance, the ability to be content with little. After all, behind everything is the readiness to neglect the material and strive for the spiritual ” [19] . He considers himself a French writer, in one of the interviews he said: “There is such a nationality - an emigrant. This is when the Russian roots are strong, but the influence of France is enormous ” [17] .
He noted that he puts Sergei Dovlatov "above A.P. Chekhov " [6] . As a writer, Makin considers himself a marginal [7] . In his own words: “I am writing so that a man stands up, looks at the sky” [7] [20] .
A constant leitmotif of the works of Makin is an attempt to escape from reality, - said Professor D. Gillespie [21] . The action of almost all Makin's novels occurs in the USSR [22] .
In 2016, Andrei Makin was elected a life member of the French Academy , the central institution for the study of the French language and the regulation of the language and literary norms [23] .
