Creation History
After recording and distributing The Invisible , Nautilus began working on a new program called 360 Degrees of Fire. For this session, part of the future compositions of “Separation” and several other songs were rehearsed. The album “360 degrees of fire”, although it was recorded, was not received, as the participants did not like the work on the album. As a result, some of the songs were rewritten for the album "Separation". Only two songs give an idea of the rejected Nautilus album - “View from the screen”, included in the soundtrack to the film “ There used to be a different time ”, and “I burn like gunpowder”, which has remained an out-of-album composition.
The album was recorded in the basement of the architectural institute, in which the members of the group were studying at that time.
The Separation album was made in a completely sloppy manner, in a dignified and light form. It was fun because there was no hint of rock industry. From the outside, it resembled a circle of interests, as something that accompanies communication. Like friendly tea in the Skillful Hands section.
- Alexey Mogilevsky [1]
The lyrics of almost all the songs were written by Ilya Kormiltsev :
Ilya wrote us three volumes of material and fought to the death for each page. Three or four texts could be selected from this wealth, and then with subsequent refinements. After the reflection at Butusov ended, the reflection began at Kormiltsev, who believed that we were doing everything wrong. He came to the basement and began to smash the chairs with his feet ... It was very difficult to calm him down. Sound engineer Andrei Makarov turned pale right before our eyes, as he carried material responsibility for the chairs.
- Dmitry Umetsky [1]
In addition to writing poetry, Kormiltsev took part directly in the recording process, and there were often conflicts between him and Butusov because the vocalist refused to sing some of the lines composed by the poet. For example, in “ Chained by One Chain ”, the original line “behind the red sunrise brown sunset” was replaced by musicians with “behind the red sunrise pink sunset”. In “ View from the screen ” Butusov did not want to sing the phrase “triple cologne”, in “Tear the fabric” - “children bring b ... th.” On this basis, Kormiltsev often made scandals, stubbornly defended every word of his texts. “Ilya at that moment was generally in such a state, so to speak, in a very agitated state,” Butusov recalled. - Everything that happened in the studio either suited him or did not suit him. That is, like that - very categorically ” [1] . In August 1986, the recording was completed:
The fact that in the basement of the architectural institute we get something epoch-making, we understood only at the end of the recording, when we sat down to listen to the album. Frankly, before Razluka, no one took Nautilus seriously and almost no one believed in them. Many then thought in more global categories, including myself.
- Ilya Kormiltsev [1]
During the year, the album "Separation" was distributed in two versions - in Moscow, Leningrad and other large cities, it was distributed in full, in Sverdlovsk and the region it was widely circulated in a truncated version - without the songs "Clap-clap" and "Chained by one chain." The reason for distributing the album was simple - these two compositions were not “flooded” for some time [2] .
Album Popularity
It was this album that brought the Nautilus Pompilius group all-Union fame. The songs published on it were “on hearing” even by many people who are rather indifferent to rock music. Along with songs about love and “urban loneliness” (“Separation”, “ This music will be eternal ”, “ Casanova ”), the album contains songs that affect the social problems of the life of Soviet people during the perestroika period (“ View from the screen ”, “ Clap- clap ”,“ Our Family ”), the anti-war, anti-militarist pamphlet“ Khaki Ball ”and, finally, the strong, comprehensive political pamphlet“ One Chain Chained ”, which Time Out magazine placed on the list of“ 100 Songs Changing Our Lives ” [3 ] . The last song contains harsh criticism of many realities of the Soviet system, of all life in the USSR.
As Dmitry Umetsky said in an interview,
We “built up” the “Separation” album, being guided by approximately the same principles: so that it would be convenient for everyone. Each person, regardless of their social status and degree of development of intelligence, should have found songs for themselves and for themselves in “Separation”.
At the opening of the next season of the Sverdlovsk rock club ... "Nautilus" first appeared in a tough image - the Wrangel non-commissioned officer uniform, orders, military makeup and riding breeches. After a cheerful student team in the recent past aggressively performed the song “Separation” acapella, a horror hung over the hall and an indescribable stupor ensued. Perhaps it was from this moment that the all-Union ascent of the Nautilus Pompilius group began.
