The team arose in 1975 on the basis of an amateur football team of workers at the port of Saigon . The new club was named “Kang Saigon” ( Vietnamese. Cảng Sài Gòn - “Port Saigon”). The team quickly became the flagship of South Vietnamese football after several well-known players were invited to join it, including Pham Huyin Tan Lang , one of the best Vietnamese football players of all time. “Portoviks” twice won the city championship of Ho Chi Minh City (in 1978 and 1979), and in 1980 they were among the 10 participants in the first championship of Vietnam , in which they took 6th place.
In 1983, Tan Lang became the club’s head coach, and remained at the helm until 2003 - 20 years. Under his leadership, the team won their first league title in 1986. And all in all, there are four of them in the club’s account, which makes it one of the most titled in Vietnam (only Thekong won more often).
However, the best performances of the team date back to the 1990s. After success in 2002, the results began to decline. In January 2009, due to the termination of funding from Port Saigon, it was decided to rename the club to Ho Chi Minh City, which caused a sharp protest from fans. All this led to the deplorable performance of the team in the championship: “Ho Chi Minh City” took the penultimate 13th place in the V-League and flew to the First Division .
