Port Harcourt was founded in 1913 by the British in an area that is traditionally inhabited by the Iquerre and Ijo people . It was named after Lewis, Viscount Harcord , Secretary of State for Colony Affairs, originally for the export of coal mined in Enugu .
During the Civil War in Nigeria, he was the headquarters of the army during Operation OAU .
Big Port Harcourt includes the city of Port Harcourt itself, consisting of the old European (township) and adjoining several new quarters, as well as of seven local government districts - Okrika , Obio-Akpor , Ikverre , Oyigbo , Ogu Bolo , Tai and Elema. .
The city is home to Rivers State University and the University of Port Harcourt. There is an international airport, two seaports, two stadiums and two oil refineries .
In connection with the overpopulation of the city in early 2009, the state government under the leadership of Governor Chibuike Amaechi announced plans to create a new city, which will be called Great Port Harcourt. The new city should be located near the Port Harcourt International Airport.
