International Translation Day ( Journée mondiale de la traduction, International Translation Day ) is a professional holiday for interpreters and translators . It is celebrated on September 30 (the day of death in 419 or 420 by St. Jerome of Stridon , who carried out a full translation of the Bible into Latin (the result of which was the appearance of the so-called “ Vulgates ”), which is traditionally considered the patron saint of translators. Federation of Translators (FIT) in 1991. The popularity of this holiday is growing every year.
In 2017, at the 71st session of the UN General Assembly , Resolution No. A / RES / 71/288 [1] was unanimously adopted, recognizing the role of professional translation in uniting peoples, in promoting peace, understanding and development, and on September 30 it was declared International UN translation day [2] .
Holiday mottos
In 2004, the holiday was celebrated under the motto: “Translation is the basis of multilingualism and cultural diversity” (MFP).
“Translators are constantly at the very center of the communication process. Being external agents of ideas and actions, they partly form the world in which we live. Translation, therefore, is a determinant of multilingual communication, and at the same time symbolizes openness to people and the development of democracy. ”(From the IFP 2004 press release).
In 2005, the holiday was celebrated under the motto: “Responsibility of the translator to the profession and society” (MFP).
In 2006, it was celebrated under the motto: "Many languages - one profession."
In 2007, it was celebrated under the motto: "Do not shoot the messenger."
In 2008, it was celebrated under the motto: “Terminology: words matter.”
In 2009, International Translator's Day was celebrated under the motto: "We work together."
In 2010, International Translator's Day was celebrated under the motto proposed by the Union of Translators of Russia : “ Quality Standard for a Variety of Voices ” [3] .
In 2011, this day was celebrated under the motto “Building Bridges between Cultures” ( English Bridging Cultures ) [4] .
In 2012, it was celebrated under the motto “Translation as an intercultural connection” [5] .
In 2013, this day was celebrated under the slogan “A united world - beyond linguistic barriers” ( eng. Beyond Linguistic Barriers - A United World ) [6] .
In 2014, this day was celebrated under the motto “The right to language: the foundation of all human rights” ( English Language Rights: Essential to All Human Rights ) [7] .
In 2015, this holiday was celebrated under the motto “ The changing face of translation and interpretation ” ( Eng. The changing face of translation and interpretation ) [8] .
In 2016, the motto “Interpretation and Translation: Connecting the Worlds” ( English Translation and Interpreting: Connecting Worlds ) was chosen [9] .

In 2018, International Translator's Day is celebrated under the motto: “Translation: promoting cultural heritage in an era of change” ( English Translation: promoting cultural heritage in changing times ) [2] .
