On August 31, 1995, Otto Stich announced his resignation as member of the Federal Council on October 31. He justified his retirement in old age. However, he later admitted that there was a connection between his resignation and a confrontation in the government between supporters and opponents of the construction of the Lechberg tunnel . Due to the financing crisis of the New Transalpine Railway, Stih called for more careful planning of the tunnel project, but was in the minority and resigned.
