Biography

Year One

James Gordon was a good cop in corrupt Chicago . After James pressed one of the city’s most influential criminal families, he was transferred to Gotham City , where he moved with his wife Barbara. Gordon was met by Detective Harvey Bullock, one of Gotham's most corrupt cops. James went to the service of Commissioner Gillian Loeb, who was in the pocket of the inviolable king of the criminal world of Gotham - Carmine "Roman" Falcone .

Gordon's integrity ensured him a difficult relationship with most of the GCPD employees ( Gotham City Police Departement - Gotham City Police Department), and they became even more complicated when James was appointed head of the task force, whose main goal was to capture the new defender of the city, Batman .

Gordon and Batman began to clear the ranks of the GCPD, and soon James was promoted to captain. District Attorney Harvey Dent joined the newly minted captain and his new ally. The trio began working on a plan to capture Falcone and his criminal family.

Long Halloween

While the plan began to work, the family life of James began to collapse, Leslie left him for a while, taking his son with him. Gordon began to work on the capture of the criminal Holiday ( English Holiday ), who killed the gangsters of the city. As a result of the investigation, James ran into his old friend, Harvey Dent, who became a villain named Two-Face .

After the celebration, Gordon received another promotion. This time he became a commissioner. Now he was bothered by a new criminal, the Hangman , who was killing policemen. James brought together a task force of honest police officers, which was supposed to deal with the eradication of corruption in the city. At the same time, the relationship between James and Barbara finally fell apart, as a result of which they divorced.

Meanwhile, the trust between Gordon and Batman grew stronger, and soon grew into a real friendship. James adopted his brother’s daughter, Barbara , after he died in a car accident, and the girl became an orphan.

James Gordon did his best to clear the ranks of the GCPD and the Gotham government. He found an ally in the person of policeman Harvey Bullock, as honest as the commissioner. Slowly but inevitably, Gotham became less corrupt.

Killing joke

Once, when Barbara once again visited James, there was a knock on the door. The girl opened the door and saw the Joker on the threshold. A clown shot her and kidnapped Gordon. The Joker began to psychologically torture the commissioner to prove to Batman that any person faced with a tragedy will go insane, like him. In the end, the Dark Knight saved James, but he forced him to promise the Avenger in a mask that with the Joker everything will be according to the law. Batman grabbed the Joker and he again went to the Arkham nuthouse . But now the Joker has become the main enemy not only of Batman, but also of James Gordon.

Soon after this ordeal, Gordon's life gradually returned to normal. James helped Barbara to adapt to her position, the Joker bullet hit the spine and caused paralysis of the legs. In addition, James made a new friend and ally, police girl Rene Montoya . In addition, Sarah Essen returned to Gotham. James and Sarah went on their first real date. Gordon was very happy. But immediately after that, years of smoking and specific work affected his health, and James suffered a heart attack.

The Fall of the Knight

Soon, James regained his health after a heart attack and began to work with previous efforts. His relationship with Sarah grew stronger and, in the end, they got married. At this time, Bruce Wayne could not be Batman after a clash with Bane , so he was replaced by Jean-Paul Valley. Gordon knew that now Batman is not his old friend and therefore refused to cooperate. This triggered a disagreement between James and the new mayor of Gotham, Armand Krol, endorsing the actions of the new cruel Batman. When Bruce Wayne returned as the Dark Knight, James was not sure that he could trust him and that he would not disappear again.

Problems between James and the mayor led to the fact that Krol demoted Gordon in the rank, and Sarah was appointed to the vacant seat of the commissioner. This added stress to the family life of James. Gordon decided to run for mayor. Bruce Wayne suggested that Marion Grange not be Gordon, but the guarantee for James was that he should become the commissar again, since it would be best for Gotham if Gordon occupied this post.

Nobody's land

After a successful election, Gordon returned to his place. James led the GCPD through the earthquake and its aftermath. When the city was declared Nobody's Land - that is, expelled from the United States, Gordon did not want to leave Gotham, he was ready to fight for Gotham to the last.

Care

After Gotham regained the status of a city, James again took up the post of commissioner, although now he was no longer the same as before. One ordinary night, James suggested that the most reliable officers go to the bar to spend the night drinking. When they went outside, someone was waiting for Gordon. This man shot him in the back several times. The culprit who attacked James was identified as Jordan Rich, a GCPD officer who was arrested by Gordon during his service in Chicago. James was injured, but after that he left the service.

After retiring, James began to travel a lot, but he was constantly drawn back to Gotham. Returning to the city, James began teaching criminology at Gotham University, was engaged in gardening and talked with Batman, who still needed his help.

Return

Gordon returned to his former post a few months after the events of the Infinite Crisis , during his absence in the city of Batman. The reasons why James returned to GCPD are unknown, but most likely this was due to the newly raised level of corruption. [one]

After returning to Gotham, the Dark Knight, Gordon was poisoned by laughing gas during a fight with the Joker , which caused James to spend some time in the hospital. [2]

Alternate

Flashpoint

During the events of Flashpoint, James is a Gotham police officer; he is single and has no children. Gordon collaborates with Batman (Thomas Wayne) and Oracle (Selina Kyle) . Together they try to find the children of Harvey Dent kidnapped by the Joker. [3]

Injustice: Gods Among Us

In the Injustice: Gods Among Us comic book series, which is a prequel to the game of the same name, Gordon first appears in his familiar role as police commissioner. However, then, after the disappearance of Bruce Wayne, Superman comes to him and demands the whereabouts of Batman . Gordon honestly replies that he does not know where he is. Then Superman asks if he has a daughter. Gordon screams furiously that Superman is threatening him, but Clark bitterly says that this is not the case, but that Gordon is sick with lung cancer, which is already in an inoperable stage. Gordon meets with Barbara and says that he knew from the very beginning that she was Batgirl and that he was dying. Realizing that he has nothing to lose, he joins the Resistance. Jim goes to the battle in the Hall of Justice, taking special pills that give superpower, but accelerate the development of oncology. In the finale, he, realizing that Cyborg was about to figure out Barbara, with the help of Lex Luthor, teleports to the Watch Tower, where he enters into battle with Victor. The cyborg says that Gordon will not be able to kill him, and he just has to wait until James dies from a highly developed oncology. But Gordon, having gathered his last strength, neutralizes and breaks the Cyborg. After that, he says goodbye to Barbara and Batman, and then dies, looking at the Earth from Space. [four]

James Gordon by Gary Oldman in the movie Batman: The Beginning

In this film, Gordon is a police sergeant, but he is one of the few honest city police officers. Returning to the city, Batman begins his campaign against crime, and James becomes one of the hero's allies. However, Batman is officially outlawed, and police must catch the hero.

Despite this, James continues to help the Dark Knight: he saves Rachel from the Scarecrow , and then with the help of the Batmobile blows up the bridge supports, preventing the plan of Scarecrow and Ras al Ghul from being executed to poison all the townspeople.

At the end of the film, Lieutenant Gordon asks Batman to catch Arkham's escaped prisoners.

The Joker, together with a group of accomplices, makes a cunning robbery of a mafia-owned bank. Prosecutor Harvey Dent issues Gordon a search warrant for all the mafia banks, but Lao, a Chinese businessman and criminal, is transporting boss money to a place he knows only.

The joker promises to remove the highest representatives of the city - the commissioner, the prosecutor, the judge and the mayor, who interfere with him.

The Joker manages to kill Commissioner Loeb, despite the presence of Gordon and his squad. The judge is also dead, although the police tried to save her. Batman rescues Harvey Dent . The next goal of the maniac is the mayor. During the commissioner's funeral, he makes an attempt on the head of the city, but Gordon closes him. The Joker requires Batman to surrender. Wayne decides to surrender, but Dent gives a false confession that he is Batman. He is being transported to prison. The Joker attacks the convoy, but Batman is also here. A clown blows up a Batmobile , and Wayne activates an alternative vehicle - a high-tech batpod . The Joker wants the hero to kill him, but he cannot do it. The maniac is arrested by the driver of the armored car in which Dent was transported, it turns out to be Gordon. He adjusted his death so that nothing threatened his family. The mayor appoints James Commissioner for the capture of the Joker.

Jokers are transported to the site. It turns out that Harvey Dent was abducted by the helpers of the clown. Batman conducts interrogation using physical force. The joker does not pay attention to pain. He reveals the fact that Rachel is also abducted and offers the hero to play his game: choose the one whom he will save. Both Dent and Rachel will explode in five minutes. The clown calls the addresses. Batman goes for the girl, Gordon - for the prosecutor. But the Joker tricked them: Batman arrives where Dent languishes. Wayne saves him, but he gets a severe burn on his face. Gordon and his subordinates do not have time - Rachel dies in the fire. A maniac blows up a plot and breaks free, taking Lao with him.

The disfigured Harvey, now calling himself Two-faced , begins to administer his justice, punishing all those involved in his and Rachel's abduction, the fate of the guilty depends on the coin toss. At the end of his revenge, he wants to punish Gordon - he abducts his family. He wants James to feel the same pain of losing a loved one as he does. The villain chooses the son of James as the victim. But Batman arrives and Dant takes the game and him. He throws a coin three times in order to find out who lives: Batman receives a bullet, Dent himself is “justified” by chance, but with the last coin to decide the fate of the boy, the wounded Batman saves the child, but accidentally pushes Dent from the roof of the building and he dies. Wayne and Gordon realize that if people find out who the Gotham White Knight has become, they will lose hope and faith in good. Batman asks the commissioner to keep Harvey's reputation unsullied and takes all the blame for his killing. Gordon does not want to do this, but admits that it is necessary. He calls Batman the Dark Knight.

Eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, Gordon is still the Gotham Police Commissioner. Thanks to the anti-criminal “Dent Act” and Batman, organized crime is virtually destroyed. However, the mayor is going to send Gordon to resign, as he is "a war hero, and now is peacetime." It was the commissioner who accidentally fell into Bane's lair during a special operation. Miraculously, he manages to survive (although he was injured). While in the hospital, Gordon continues to act as commissioner. In addition, he calls Batman to himself and says that he must return. But all the actions of James play into Bane’s hand. When the villain captures Gotham, Gordon remains one of the few cops not to fall into the trap of Bane. He organizes a resistance detachment. In the end, when Bane was defeated, Batman decided to detonate the bomb away from the city. Before taking off, Batman let Gordon know that he was hiding Bruce Wayne under his mask.
