Swivel (drilling equipment)

Swivel ( Eng. Swivel ) - an important element of the rig , providing free rotation of the drill string while supplying flushing fluid to it. A swivel is installed between the tackle system and the drilling tool and prevents twisting of the rope. The swivel also supports the weight of the drill string . [one]

Swivel - Swivel

There are three types of swivels:

  • A drill swivel is a connecting link of two parts of the mechanism (or chain links), allowing each of them to rotate around its axis.
  • Flushing swivel is designed to supply flushing fluid from the pump to the bottom of the well and to provide the possibility of rotation of the pipes during repair work in oil and gas wells.
  • The power swivel is used in the overhaul of oil and gas wells, including sidetracking. It provides high efficiency and safety of work through the application of top drive technology.

The reliability of the swivel depends on the uptime of the entire rig .
