Niacornate

Residents earn a living by fishing and marine mammals. Namely, ringed seals, sea hares, harp, crested and walruses . There is a seasonal catch of narwhal, beluga , and, in extremely rare cases, whales . There is fishing for Atlantic cod, halibut and sharks. Whales were discovered in Nyacornat last November. This shows that Nyakornat, like other settlements in northwestern Greenland, is experiencing the effects of global warming.

In the spring there is a limited hunt for polar bears . Hunting for deer / caribou, arctic hares, partridges and various seabirds by season. Niacornate is a traditional hunting culture. Dog sledding and small boats are used during hunting. The village is ideally located for the study of narwhals, belugas, polar bears, ringed seals, as well as other animals. Nyakornat is an example of a well-functioning small village in which residents still live from the exploitation of local biological resources, and it is a continuation of the Greenland hunting tradition.

The village has contact with the rest of the world through satellite and telephone communications, and Internet access . In the village there is a tank with 3 million liters of water, which comes from the lake, which is located in the mountains. There is also a shared house where residents have access to a modern laundry room and bathhouse. Residents have created local organizations that will work to attract more tourists - especially from cruise ships. In 2007, the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, headquartered in Nuuk , established its station in Niacornate. In November 2007, there were 9 students at a local school.

The Nyakornat heliport is located in the village.
