Story
The protagonist of the novel , who was named Duny in childhood, was born and spent his childhood on the island of Gaunt of the Earthsea archipelago. His mother died early, of the relatives of the boy, only his father and aunt remained - a village sorceress. At seven, Duney demonstrates an innate talent for magic , and her aunt decides to teach him the little that she knows. For the ability to subjugate wild birds, and in particular the sparrow hawk, Duney receives the nickname Hawk ( English Sparrowhawk ), which he will continue to use.
Four years later, he uses his magical abilities to protect his native village from attack by barbarians. The rumor that the little boy saved the village reaches the wise Gontian magician Ogion the Silent , and he decides to take the boy with him and make him his student. When the Hawk comes of age, the magician Ogion gives him his secret true name - Ged .
Guesd dreams of learning more about magic and longs for the glory of the great wizard, but does not understand what his patient and wise Ogion teaches. Then Ogion offers Ged to make a choice - to stay with him on the island of Gaunt or go to study on the island of Rock, where there is a school of magicians common to the whole of the Earth Sea.
There Geda is ridiculed by a certain Jasper, who is also a school student. Jasper is higher in rank, and Ged wants to prove to him that he is no less powerful, and one night casts a spell that calls the dead. But along with the spirit of the summoned monster comes into the world - a certain Shadow who wants to kill Ged’s soul and occupy his body, but for the first time the Head of the school, who came to the aid of the student in time, prevents the Shadows. Ged escapes from the Isle of Rock, pursued by Shadow, experiences many adventures, but finally he chases after her and wins.
Films
In 2004, the Sci-Fi Channel filmed the television film Legends of the Earth Sea , combining the plots of The Wizard of Earth Sea and the Tombs of Atuan.
In 2006, based on the novel " Tehanu ", a full-length animated film directed by Goro Miyazaki " Tales of the Earth Sea " was shot.
Ursula Le Guin herself spoke disapprovingly of the changes in the plot, and considered the film adaptations to be more likely films based on her works, in some places very far from her own vision of a book about the Earthsea and its heroes.
