They speak the Esan language of the edoid branch of the Benue-Congolese family of languages (previously this group belonged to the qua family).
By faith, Christians (Catholics and Protestants) and followers of traditional beliefs.
Most immigrants from Benin , were part of the empire at the end of the 15th-16th centuries and whose subjects the ruler of the rulers recognize themselves to this day. A smaller part connects itself with the Yoruba , Igala , Nupa , for (Igbo) , Itsekiri .
