Background
After the fall of Goguryeo in 668 and a brief Chinese occupation, the kingdom of Parhe , populated by Koreans and the people of Mohe , arose in Manchuria and the Primorsky Territory . Immediately after the fall of Koguryo, the Türks ( kokturks ) were driven out of Central Asia by the Chinese Tang Dynasty . Another Turkic tribe, the Uighurs , replaced the kokturks, but their influence was insignificant.
During the weakening of the Uigurs, Chinese Tan and Parhe, the Mongol Khitan tribe entered the region of present Inner Mongolia. They began to spread their influence, and in 916 the Khitan leader Eliu Ambagai founded the Liao Empire. The Khitan state continued to grow and in 926 attacked Parhe, conquering it. Ten years later, in 936, after Koryo united the Korean tribes, Liao captured 16 Chinese provinces south of the Great Wall and founded the late Qin dynasty there ( Chinese 晋 ).
Over time, the Khitan became a powerful force and soon their interests clashed with the interests of Koryo, who also carried out expansion to the north.
