Biography

Born on May 26, 1936 , (according to other sources - January 10 [2] ), in Tbilisi (according to other sources - in the village of Obcha, Baghdat District, Georgian SSR [3] ) in the family of a winemaker .

In 1958 he graduated from the faculty of choral conducting of the Tbilisi Conservatory , in 1963 - graduate school in opera and symphony conducting there under the direction of Odyssey Dimitriadi . Trained in France with Igor Markevich .

At an early stage of his creative activity, Dzhansug Kakhidze was fond of folklore singing and founded the vocal ensemble " Shvidkatsa " ("Seven"), performing Georgian folk music, which in 1957 received a gold medal at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow . A year later, the ensemble received a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Brussels .

In 1958 - 1962 - artistic director and chief conductor of the State Choir of Georgia .

In 1962 - 1971 - conductor of the Georgian Opera and Ballet Theater (Tbilisi) (in 1965 - 1968 - chief conductor).

In 1971 - 1973 he directed the opera house in Lodz ( Poland ), where, in particular, he staged Zakharia Paliashvili 's opera Abesalom and Eteri .

In 1973 - 1993 - artistic director and chief conductor of the GSO of the Georgian SSR . At the same time, in 1982 he returned to the Georgian Opera and Ballet Theater and directed his orchestra until the end of his life. Conducted by the premieres of the operas Salome by R. Strauss , Music for the Living by G. A. Kancheli and others.

In 1993, he founded the new Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra and was also its permanent leader.

For many years, Dzhansuga Kakhidze linked the creative community with the composer Gia Kancheli; in particular, Kakhidze performed and recorded all his symphonies.

His conductor’s wand is in the Giuseppe Verdi Museum in Busseto .

Dzhansug Kakhidze belongs to a number of films made by the Georgia-Film Studio, of which the film “ The Legend of the Suram Fortress ” (1984) is the most famous. And in the picture of Otar Ioseliani " There lived a song thrush " (1971) Kakhidze played the role of conductor.
