Egorov Aleksey Egorovich (March 7, 1884, p. Surushino , Tver province - August 19, 1937, Moscow ) - hegumen of the Holy Russian Orthodox Church , was canonized as a martyr in 2001 for general veneration [1] .

Biography
Born in the family of peasants Egor Ilarionovich and Agafiya Efremovna Egorov. He graduated from the parish school .
- January 18, 1908 entered the Valaam Monastery .
- October 19, 1911 enrolled in novices.
- On February 21, 1914, he was tonsured in a mantle with the name Athanasius.
On April 24, 1921, he was ordained to the rank of hierodeacon , after some time as a hieromonk , and then elevated to the rank of hegumen by Metropolitan Sergius . He served in the temple of the village of Izmailovo, Reutovsky district of the Moscow region.
Arrest and Martyrdom
Arrested on June 26, 1937 on charges of terrorist agitation and the provision of material assistance to the clergy imprisoned for anti-Soviet activities. Imprisoned in Butyrka prison . Interrogation fragment:
“So you are a close associate of Metropolitan Sergius of Stragorodsky ?”
- Yes, Metropolitan Sergius treated me well, but still he considered me to a certain extent as his servant. Being a member of the metropolitan, I was in charge of household matters, sometimes helped him with services in the church and carried out other instructions of the metropolitan.
- On behalf of Metropolitan Sergius, did you provide material assistance to churchmen repressed for anti-Soviet activity?
- Yes, he did - on behalf of Metropolitan Sergius, and on his own initiative.
By a resolution of the “ troika ” of the UNKVD in the Moscow Region of August 19, 1937, he was sentenced to death.
Shot on the same day, August 19, 1937.
Canonization
He was counted among the holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia by the Decree of the Holy Synod of February 22, 2001.
Memorial Day: August 7 (20) and in the Cathedral of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia .
