Format and participants

In June 2005, 17 teams from countries with a low level of football development, the so-called β€œemerging”, were invited to participate in the tournament:

  •   Afghanistan
  •   Brunei
  •   Butane
  •   East Timor
  •   Guam
  •   Cambodia
  •   Kyrgyzstan
  •   Laos
  •   Macau
  •   Mongolia
  •   Nepal
  •   Pakistan
  •   Palestine
  •   Tajikistan
  •   Taiwan
  •   Philippines
  •   Sri Lanka

And also 2 countries from the category of "developing" ( Eng. Developing) -   Bangladesh and   India [2]

East Timor, Mongolia and Laos refused to participate in the tournament. Thus, 16 teams took part in the tournament, which were divided into 4 groups. The 2 best teams from the group went into the playoffs.

It should be noted that India was represented at the tournament by the youth national team under 20 years old, with the goal of preparing for the AFC Youth Championship 2006, which India later hosted. The Kyrgyz national team was also composed mainly of players who then represented the country at the AFC Youth Championship in India.
