Sharma, Kamalesh

Kamalesh Sharma ( born Kamalesh Sharma ) (born September 30, 1941) is the current Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations since 2008 [1] , and before that was the High Commissioner of India in London [2] . Kamalesh Sharma is a graduate of the Modern School on Barakhamba Street in New Delhi , St. Stephen's College in Delhi and King's College in Cambridge [3] . Sharma was an officer in the Indian diplomatic service from 1965 to 2001. He served as the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations until his retirement. From 2002 to 2004, he served as Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in East Timor . He was appointed High Commissioner of India to the UK in 2004. He is also the rector of Queen's University Belfast since July 2009. [4] [5]

Commonwealth Secretary General

Sharma was elected Secretary-General after Michael Frendo, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta, during the two-year Commonwealth Summit in Kampala , Uganda , from November 22 to November 24, 2007 [6] . He took over from Sir Don MacKinnon of New Zealand on April 1, 2008. [7]

Rector, Queen's University of Belfast

On July 9, 2009, Sharma was appointed rector of Queen's University in Belfast after the resignation of Senator George J. Mitchell [8] . Queen's College says he is responsible for building relationships between Northern Ireland and India, which led to investments in Northern Ireland enterprises [8] . This post is largely an honorary title, and Sharma said that he was extremely proud that he was given a job at Queen's University of Belfast [8] .
