Biography

Education and monasticism

Dimitri Troitsky was born on October 6 ( 18 ), 1887 in the family of a clergyman of the village of Lipitsy, Lipitsky volost, Kashirsky district, Tula province (now the village is part of the urban district of Serpukhov, Moscow region ).

He graduated from the Tula Theological College and, in 1909, the Tula Theological Seminary [1] .

In 1913 he graduated from the St. Petersburg Theological Academy with a degree of candidate of theology . In the same year he graduated from the Imperial St. Petersburg Archaeological Institute .

Since August 16 ( 29 ), 1913 - teacher of the Kholm Theological Seminary (the city of the Hill of the Kholm province ).

On September 28, 1913, he was tonsured a monk ; from September 29, 1913, the hierodeacon; On October 1, 1913, he was ordained a hieromonk .

Since August 26 ( September 8 ), 1914 - teacher at the Department of Scripture of the Tula Theological Seminary .

Since October 28 ( November 10 ), 1917 - rector of the Bolkhovsky Trinity Optin Monastery of the Orel Diocese . At the same time he was chairman of the Bolkhovsky Makaryevsky branch of the Oryol Church Historical and Archaeological Society.

On April 12 ( 25 ), 1918 , he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite .

Bishop

On April 17 ( 30 ), 1921 , on Holy Saturday , Archimandrite Daniel was ordained bishop of Yelets , vicar of the Oryol diocese .

Since September 14, 1921 - Bishop of Bolkhovsky , vicar of the Oryol diocese.

During the sermons, he criticized the new government: “Everyone forgot the righteous doctrine and began to believe in some bunch of people who did not understand themselves ...” He was arrested on November 2, 1921 in Bolkhov for anti-Soviet agitation and chairing the church historical and archaeological society illegally existing from 1918 to 1921 in Orel . On April 8, 1922, he was released on bail from the borders of Bolkhovsky and Mtsensk counties.

May 17, 1922, in view of the arrest of Bishop Seraphim, the clergy of the Oryol diocese asked Bishop Daniel to take control of the diocese. Bishop struggling with renovationism [2] .

On October 28, 1922, he was again arrested in Bolkhov for counter-revolutionary agitation and the illegal existence of a church historical and archaeological society. On November 15, 1922, the Presidium of the Oryol OGPU of the USSR sentenced him to 2 years of deportation to Khiva . He was serving a link in the city of Penjikent .

His anti-renewal activity was a success. In March 1923, the Oryol city executive committee noted that “only in Yelets and Bolkhov do most clergy hold on to the old church thanks to the agitation of the bishops of Daniel ... and Nicholas ” [3] .

Being an exile, together with Bishop Vasily (Zummer) participated in the secret hierarchal ordination of Bishop Luke (Voino-Yasenetsky) .

After being released from exile, he lived in Moscow.

He signed a letter of 25 bishops dated April 2, 1926 in support of the canonical measures of punishment undertaken by the Deputy Patriarchal Locum Tenens Metropolitan Sergius against the organizers of the Gregorian schism .

From April to September 1926 he was imprisoned in Butyrskaya prison in Moscow , after which he was sent to Kineshma .

Since December 1927 - Bishop of Shadrinsk , Vicar of the Sverdlovsk diocese. Apparently, he did not take up the post.

Since May 24, 1928 - Bishop of Roslavl , vicar of the Smolensk diocese .

"For agitation against collective farms" was arrested and deported to the Arkhangelsk province .

Since August 1931 - Bishop of Oryol .

Since December 1931 - Bishop of Bryansk and Sevsky .

The inhabitants of Bryansk were remembered for their fiery sermons, as well as for the relics of the Holy Prince Oleg Romanovich Bryansky who were found and buried under the altar of the Vvedensky temple under him. This was done "in order to avoid scolding from the godless authorities."

On January 3, 1934, he was elevated to the rank of archbishop .

Archbishop Daniil died of typhus on March 17, 1934 in the city of Bryansk, Western Region (now the administrative center of the Bryansk Region ), health affected in the last northern link affected.

Archbishop Daniel was buried in a small cemetery in the Volodarsky district of the city ​​of Bryansk . In the 1950s, the cemetery was liquidated; a courtyard of a residential building was built in its place. Nobody decided to rebury the remains of Daniel at that time.

On November 26, 2002, the Prosecutor's Office of the Oryol Region was rehabilitated in the case of 1922 [4] .

The Question of Canonization

In 2005, the commission for the canonization of Archbishop Daniel completed its work in the Bryansk diocese. After studying the archival documents, the church authorities recognized that the archbishop suffered for the faith, that is, there is an opportunity for him to be counted among the saints as a confessor. The solution to this question lies with the Holy Synod .
